Blues Run the Game: The Tragedy of Jackson C. Frank

Naturalismo has no involvement with Jim Abbott. We are keeping his words below as his final statement on the issue. Natuarlismo is keeping this post in place to provide a forum to discuss strategies for resolving the situation. If we deleted this post, everyone would be left in the dark, including others who might potentially lose money if not for the informational warnings contained in the thread below.

For the time being, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK until it is absolutely clear that it has been published and being distributed through reputable retailers. That is our final word on the subject. We apologize for any inconvenience our post has caused, but we do not take any responsibility for whomever is witholding the book and any funds received for it. Thank you.

From Jim Abbott:

Hi. I am Jim Abbott and there are some posts on the Naturalismo site referring to a book I am writing, sort of. The posts are inferring that I was selling the book or some such and that people were bilked by myself. I was notified about this again today by a friend.
Here is the deal:
I was and am writing a book about my friend Jackson. It is not finished.
Someone posted a blurb somewhere saying they were me and were selling “my” book for an unknown amount of money. It was not me. My book is not finished. Apparently a couple of people sent someone the money and now are angry. I can’t blame them. It was not, however, me that posted any blurb.
I am requesting that the whole blog thing be removed because shit is coming back to me that I don’t deserve or need. I will gladly look into it if I know more about the details. I have requested that people send me any info about it so I can find out the truth but I don’t have time for this nonsense. Thanks

7. Jim Abbott here–the REAL one, and I am seriously concerned about this crap. I have not even finished my book yet and know nothing about this stuff going on. Someone is playing with fire here and I am looking into it. Tyler, whoever you are, email me at jimbob12404@gmail.com and let me know where you got your info. I have a feeling I know who is behind this but cant be sure until i know what is going on. To all of you who were taken by someone, I certainly apologize for that but I have not finished my book yet. My publisher did indeed die and I told many people that. I also was probably too looselipped with some people about the book and sent large sections of it for their perusal. Again, I am out of the loop on this one. I will dig in and see whgat I can find so my good name is still intact. Those who know me know that this isn’t my MO and isnt even in my DNA.

8. Since the whole Jackson C. Frank disappearance and reappearance story is a fraud, I hope the book doesn’t materialize. JCF was a stage name for someone who is still alive and a legend in his own mind. He bears no relationship to the down and out “reincarnation” of JC.

9. I might email again, but I got a response in mid-September saying, “I had sent a mass mailing explaining a couple week delay so I could add a few things and get a permission for something in it. I might not have done it properly (the mailing) \.”
Was a bit concerned after the link disappeared on the Jackson C Frank site (http://www.blueangel.demon.co.uk/jcfrank/), fingers crossed it does show up at some point.

10. Hi. I am Jim Abbott, and, contrary to what I am reading here, I have not finished my book and have not posted anything about it as yet. I have been seeing mentions of it, and the title “The Tragedy of Jackson C. Frank”. That WAS a working title at one time but no longer. My book won’t be ready for some time yet, so I think someone is playing a cruel trick here. I hope no one has fallen for it, although it appears that some have.

Don’t know what to believe about this book any more but if someone uses myspace it may be worth trying to advise people not to send money to that address – at least until someone sees a copy of the book.

As for paypal, I’m going to file a dispute and hope to get a response or my money back. If anyone ever does receive a book from their money, please get in contact with me because if it does turn out to be real I would still like to read it.

It’s now nearly Christmas and we still haven’t received the books we paid you for months ago. You were paid in good faith both for the book plus a CD (the carrot on the stick) which you are not now sending but not offering any partial refund in respect of. With the utmost repect I have to tell you that irrespective of the problems you have had we have been more than fair with you and are now starting to get annoyed. Please either send the 2 books or refund the money which you were paid via Paypal from Aidan Armitage.

Lets try that again—I have had a couple of weeks delay—the dates were never firm—due to having to secure some permissions from people for the use of their correspondence and also more importantly because an important contributor to the book has been tardy in sending me his last installments regardings Jackson’s early life, which is crucial to his story. I apologize for the delay but I want this to be as complete and comprehensive as possible.
Thanks

Hi Jim

My friend Aidan Armitage paid you some time ago via Paypal for two copies of your book with the free CD. Since we haven’t heard anything and the book is now overdue we were becoming concerned that we would not get them. I am somewhat alarmed by your comments on this blog about not having a publisher for a wider audience but trust that you will honour our pre release order which was paid for in good faith. I notice that you expected to mail books out by 1st September but as I live in England it may be still on its way. I should be grateful if you could set my mind at rest and check that the two books for Aidan Armitage in Leeds England have already been sent.

Kind Regards
Bob Howe

29. Further to the above copy e-mails which if you read through them give the e-mail address of jim abbott as jimbob12404@yahoo. In a reputable article published by the folk blues and beyond website elsewhere about Jackson prior to his death, what do you think the Jackson C Frank contact e-mail address is, you’ve guessed it jimbob12404@yahoo. Don’t take my word for it read for yourself at this link. http://www.folkblues.co.uk/artistsfrank.html.
So Jim, firstly it was a lot more than a couple of people you ripped off I personally know of at least six @ $30 each which I suspect is the tip of the iceberg. You either now refund the $60 you fraudulently claimed from myself and my friend (I will give you my e-mail address on request)for your non existent book or I will now contact Paypal on behalf of myself and anyone else who wants to post on this site and see what they can do. Jackson was a great songwriter and would turn in his grave if he knew that you were stealing from people in his memory.

Comment by Bob Howe — July 4, 2009 @ 1:30 am
30. Bob Howe. I’m glad finally someone has posted something like this. As you can see from my last comment above, the nickname ‘jimbob12404’ at yahoo WAS the one who took our money. And the one who claims that he’s the real one, uses the same name at gmail now. That’s what I meant, Jon Evermore. How is he gonna explain that?

But Bob Howe, unfortunately, contacting PayPal now won’t help anything. PayPal doesn’t care if it’s fraud or not, if it’s been over 6 months after the payment, you can never get your money back. Believe me, I contacted them, and also had filed for a dispute. Never worked. The money is long gone.

That’s why I wasn’t saying anything until now.
I mean look at it now, no matter what happans, if Jim Abbott claims that he wasn’t the one who ripped us all off, (there were 25 of us on the mail list he’d sent in Sep 2008)
There’s no way for us to get our money back.

He might say that jimbob12404 at yahoo wasn’t him.
Well, take a look at this page (and also, the link Bob Howe has provided)

http://froots.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=13394&sid=d1ec6078afa3ad1076c4eee17f3ef555

So, the yahoo account doesn’t belong to Jim Abbott? Someone else had created the account to act as the real one and even tried to get a publisher?

Okay now, to make that story stick, it had to happen like this.
The fake had gathered some information about the book, creats an account ‘jimbob12404’ at yahoo. The handle which the real one uses. He sends out the false info to various sites, takes the money and run.

Now, take a look at these pages

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Dave-and-Tracy/message/3927
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/singout/message/2762
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Dave-and-Tracy/message/5726

‘jimbob12404’ at yahoo wrote a messege on Mon Nov 17, 2003.
Unless there was some guy even 6 years ago tried to act like the real one, this doesn’t make sense.
The one who uses the nickname ‘jimbob12404’ at yahoo IS named Jim Abbott and he IS the one who took the money. Abbott, how will you going to explain this?

People will eventually find out the truth unless you pay us all back.

31. Why was my comment deleted?

If the admin has a reason to delete someone’s comment, why doesn’t he just delete what’s been said and leave the comment space there?

With something like ‘This comment has been deleted – reason’

It’s not pleasant to see my long comment gone without knowing why.
Plus, this site also has a responsibility for having posted a false info. And there has been no word of excuse.

Should this comment be deleted, I’d like to know why. It took me almost an hour to write the previous comment.
Was the email address the reason? or you didn’t want Jim Abbott to read it.

32. Since I didn’t save my comment and I don’t want to go through all the details again (and god knows when it’ll be gone), this is what I had to say.

1. Bob Howe, I’m glad you posted something like this. I didn’t write it down cause I didn’t think there’s any hope left for us. And I still believe there isn’t. PayPal doesn’t care if you’re involved in a fraud or not, 6 months after the payment, there’s no way you could get your money back. Believe me, I’ve tried everything and the answer was no.

jimbob12404 at yahoo is the one who took the money.
So, if he was a fake why did he even tried to get a publisher? Was he trying to act like Jim Abbott and even created the account ‘jimbob12404’ (which the real one uses) at yahoo? The last link shows it was posted in November 2003. So, he’s been acting like the real one since 2003? To take the money and run in 2008?

3. There were 25 of us on the list of the mail Abbott had sent us in September 2008. Now, unless ‘someone’ decides to refund us all, there’s no way for us to get the money back.

4.Everything leads me to believe there indeed is only ONE Jim Abbott, I’m waiting, we’re wating for him or somebody to correct me if I’m wrong.

33. Hey, is naturalismo in kahoots with Jim Abbott?

I posted 2 long comments with strong evidences and they’ve been deleted without a reason. Seeing my comment above hasn’t been, at least one of the people with the permission to delete must feel guilty about something.

I guess people here only have to leave a comment that you’re going to be happy with.
Yeah, go ahead and delete this too.

Comment by travis — July 4, 2009 @ 10:39 pm
34. Naturalismo is not in “kahoots” with Jim Abbott. We posted the book information because we stumbled across a website that claimed to be selling the book. There is no conspiracy. If there was foul play on the part of that website, then Naturalismo was duped as well. So, we deleted our post and left the comment stream alive to provide an arena for people to discuss their problems with the book and, hopefully, resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Please be patient, keep listening to Jackson C. Frank’s music, and trust that, in the end, everything will be ok.

35. I appreciate your reply, since it at least answers one of my two questions.

My other question is, why did you delete my comments? (two of them)

I was and still am mad because I have no idea why they’re gone and even with your reply, I can’t figure out the reason. I was already mad at the person who took our money and my comments being gone? It’s too much for me.
So, we deleted our post and left the comment stream alive to provide an arena for people to discuss their problems with the book
If this really is the case, please be fair enough to tell me why, as far as I know, my comments had no four words nor personal attacks addressed to anybody.
I wrote down simple facts and links that I found through google.(which is available and open to the public obviously)

If you remember what you said, you’re more than welcome to repost it. We’re not trying to hurt you. We’re here to help.

37. As you can see Jim, from the adverse comments by other people on this blog it is not going to go away and neither am I so you need to think long and hard. Fraud is a criminal offence and if Paypal have to refund all the money that you obtained by deception they are going to be less than happy with you. I would strongly advise anyone who paid this conman by Paypal to get in touch with them and notify the date and transaction details for the non existent book. If everyone who paid does this, there is a reasonable chance he will be prosecuted or at the very least have his account cancelled or blacklisted. Good luck everybody.

Comment by Bob Howe — July 6, 2009 @ 12:17 am
38. Bob Howe, as you probably know already, my comments with PayPal refund info is gone.
I don’t know if this one can stay alive long enough for you to read, but the fact is, you can not get your money back 6 months after the payment. They have this ridiculous policy thing going on, which I simply couldn’t make myself an exception. To my knowledge, we can’t have our money back untill the one who took it personally pay us back.

Comment by travis — July 6, 2009 @ 5:15 pm
39. Thanks Travis
I’ve since discovered something similar which means that if a liar like Jim Abbott can string you along long enough with false promises for Paypal’s refund guarantee to run out, he can rip you off. As you can see my issues with him are 100% genuine and as I am a firm believer in karma I have every faith that his lies and deceit will come back to haunt him. People like Jim Abbott who are worthless enough to steal from Jackson even after his awful life and death are scum beneath contempt. It’s a pity noone who was scammed lives near enough to pay him a visit and express our displeasure personally to his face.
Thanks again Travis and no votes to Naturalissimo for continuing to give scumbag Abbott a forum to tell even more lies.

Comment by Bob Howe — July 6, 2009 @ 10:54 pm
40. Naturalismo is not giving Jim Abbott a forum to tell lies. Natuarlismo is giving people like yourself and Travis a forum to discuss strategies for resolving the situation. 41. I’m as annoyed as the next man when someone scams me out of £15 (or however much it was) but some of these comments are a bit disappointing to read. People wanting the man to choke and calling him scum?
Yeah, I’m not entirely sold on the imposter scenario either (the email story doesn’t add up in my mind), but this man had the heart to try and help Jackson in his dying years. Without this man a lot of us probably wouldn’t have ever heard the music or have known the tragedy.
Who knows Jim’s story? People do regrettable things in hours of need.

I’d love to read the book at some point but I would also enjoy hearing the truth without emotions flying all over the place.

As for naturalismo, no idea what the deletion of comments is all about but I really appreciate you leaving this forum open for discussion. Thank you.

How was I suppose to know there was such a thing like spam filter? I have to admit I became a bit over emotional after seeing my 2nd comment gone.
I was pretty damn sure ‘someone’ was deleting my comments.
But now it’s all clear and I appreciate Tyler for first, posting them again (God knows what he had to go through) second, yes, indeed for keeping this all alive or else we wouldn’t even be here exchanging thoughts and informations.

44. Andrew, I am impressed with your overriding sense of decency and Travis too, you are obviously really nice people but as someone who has also known real hardship and poverty I find it much harder to forgive. At the time I paid my share of that money to Jim Abbott,I too was very ill, living on benefits and had very little but I paid it to him in good faith to learn about the life of a musician who was very special to me and in whose music I took great comfort, through many dark hours.

If Jim Abbott had been honest with me and said that in the end the money had gone but he couldn’t afford to finish the book, that if he ever did he would send it to me, then I could have forgiven him. Instead he has chosen to fabricate a ridiculous tissue of lies, excuses and denials which have been shot full of holes in this forum. It is this that I find so hard to forgive and why I have no hesitation in rubbishing him relentlessly until he finally admits the truth and refunds the money he has taken under false pretences. On a more practical level now if the book were ever published, would it have any credibility, bearing in mind the ease with which Mr Abbott is able to lie? I think after reading his postings I would rather just have a refund because I don’t think he is capable of writing the truth.

Comment by Bob Howe — July 8, 2009 @ 9:05 pm
45. Truly sorry for hear that, Bob. I would recommend you try emailing him at the gmail address as he suggests he wants to put things right with a printing of the book. Whether it will happen I can’t guarantee but paypal are such an inept company when it comes to refunding that you’re probably more likely to receive a copy of the book.

Heck, if it was certain to sell and make its money back (and cover others that pre-ordered) I’d be willing to get it printed (so long as I was the one dealing with the material and printers).

Thanks for your post but as you can see from the sequence of emails in both directions which I copied and pasted above I just got excuse after excuse and eventually he stopped replying altogether. A really nice guy! Fortunately I am much better now and not experiencing the hardship I was back then but having explained myself I hope that you can understand why I feel so angry towards him.

Comment by Bob Howe — July 8, 2009 @ 10:14 pm
47. Andrew, I understand what you mean by ‘hearing the truth without emotions flying all over the place’, but by that rationale, would it be ok for Bob Howe and me to rip off people? Only because we’re having a hard time? I know, I know you didn’t mean that but I’m as angry as Bob Howe here.

Jim Abbott had given us dozens of lies he couldn’t even keep and wasted not only our valuable money but our time.

I’d even given the book info to a friend and although he knows what’s happened, I can’t help myself but feel guilty for having given him the false information.

Bob Howe, don’t take me for a super nice guy on this one. I won’t go into details but I exactly remember what I had to go through in August 2008 in order to pay that lying bastard. I was only showing my little bit of respect to Naturalismo and its people for keeping this alive, they could have easily deleted this page and said the fraud thing had nothing to do with them.

And by April this year, when it seemed obvious it’s a fraud, I was thinking pretty much the same thing, meaning, that Jim Abbott should be thankful that no one who takes this seriously lives in the states to take it to the authorities.
And to this day, I still don’t get why only the two of us take this matter seriously. No matter how much the amount was, I’d rather burn the money than hand it to a liar.

Jim Abbott was lying to us in the first place and even pulled that ‘it wasn’t me’ bullshit. I don’t even feel sorry for him, I only feel sorry for myself for having been too naive to pay my money to someone like him. God, was I glad to hear about a book on Frank’s life.

My opinion on that ‘whether to get the money back or the book’ thing?
I don’t even think about it, cause neither will happen.

48. Last but not least.
I’d like to hear from the man himself, what he’s got to say, if it’s not gonna be another excuse or a lie. And from Jon Evermore, who appears to be one of his real life friends and pretty sure Jim Abbott wasn’t the man behind all this.

Comment by Travis — July 8, 2009 @ 11:43 pm
49. Travis, what makes you believe i’m one of his real life friends? Because i decribed him as altruistic? that’s just how Mojo described him. because i said don’t choke? And jon evermoore is pretty sure there is only one jim abbott, as i already stated. look at all the evidence posted over recent years. gotta be just the one jim here. big puzzle is why did this happen? never gonna be a mega bucks scam since how many have even heard of jackson c frank. gotta be more profitable icons out there. jim, if you’re still reading this, why not publish the ‘unfinished’ book here in installments. you can only gain altruism since its not likely you can ever gain money from this – unless you get a publisher and none are gonna beleve in jackson as much as we do to bother with a book deel.

50. I know this in no way makes up for it, but someone kindly sent me two tracks that would no doubt have appeared on the pre-order CD. Click my name for the link to the songs. (No, they weren’t sent by Jim)

And no, I don’t think fraud is acceptable in any way; yes, I too was extremely excited to hear that there would be more details about Jackson in a dedicated book, but it seemed a bit fishy from the start so even if Jim’s intentions were truly to print a book there was always something in the back of my mind sceptical about it going ahead. Still really hope that the latest message from Jim was real.

Anyway, go take a listen to the two tracks, the first one has a bit of digital distortion unfortunately but considering they’ve been hidden away for at least 40 years I was ecstatic to have them in my email inbox.

51. This is such a strange development. I also shelled out the money months ago and have been following the story on this board (which seems to be the only Jackson site actually up at this moment). When did the blueangel site get shut down anyway? That was the only Jackson site that was ever updated (that I know of anyway) and they took the link to the book details down, and now the site itself is gone. This whole thing is just bizarre. I messaged Andrew from the myspace page once or twice thinking he was somehow in on the developments, considering the great pictures on his page which I had never come across before. But it seems that no one’s really sure what is going on. Plus that estate planning thing, which only further complicates matters. Honestly what upset me most was the possibility of there being more songs from Jackson that I was promised (and didn’t recieve), and the possibility of new pictures, or anything at all. I don’t know where Andrew found those pictures (I thought I had all of the publicly released Jackson-related media) or where these two songs surfaced from, but it gives me hope that there is stuff out there and that, hopefully, it’ll be passed on to us soon. As aggrivating as this is, I’m willing to give Abbott (whichever one), the benefit of the doubt in hopes that the songs leaked to us are just a taste of more to come.

52. Robert, You said:

There is no mystery about blueangel. Demon Internet (thanks, after being a customer for 12 years!) left me without a broadband connection for 3 weeks, so I decided to change ISP. The free webspace therefore went a few months ago. I had taken a security mirror 6 months earlier, but having only just registered it with Google this week there have been no visitors yet, it should all be here:

http://www.hut-six.co.uk/jcfrank/

There should be some updates, when I’m not so busy.

Jim Abbott asked me to remove the link to the paypal ad on 8th September 2008, I believe it still exists in several other places. (I also see the domain jacksoncfrank.com which he registered last year has been renewed this week, by someone).

My website has never had any connexion with Jim Abbott, in fact he has contributed nothing to it. Rather odd considering his position. Anyway I never expected anything.
Certainly did not expect what I eventually got from Jim Abbott. Thanks Jim.

Andrew, thanks for the songs. Incredible stuff. Now I know the lost bio and CD is even more tragic than I ever thought. Maybe it will surface one day. Someone out there must have the songs.

54. This “Naturalismo” site has developed since I posted an e-mail almost a year ago. I haven’t followed all the discussion, and may be a victim of the book scam(?) too. All I can say is, I trust the notes with the double Castle CD of JCF, to the effect that Jim Abbott looked after him for his last years, and so he should be thanked for that.
However, web scams do happen. Several years ago I nearly fell for one which offered Hedy West’s LPs in CD format, claiming that Hedy was issuing these herself – which was not true.
I can only say that a year ago, I had several e-mails from “Jim Abbott” (or an impersonator) promising me the book plus CD. I raised issues of copyright, since the CD was to include a lost BBC John Peel session with JCF, but “J.A.” was unconcerned. He also claimed that he had asked Bert Jansch to contribute. I’d hoped to confirm that with Bert at his concert in Edinburgh this month, but that has been cancelled due to Bert sustaining an injury.
Meanwhile the real Jim Abbott has put his head above the parapet in a MOJO (UK music magazine) article on JCF, in which the proposed book is mentioned with a working title. Let’s hope it sees the light of day, with or without CD – not because I’ve a copy on order (or is it?) but JCF deserves it, and Jim Abbott too. Anyone with any experience of trying to write and publish a book will know just how much hard work and frustration is involved!

We’re way past the impersonator thing if you read the comments properly. Spare your sympathy for the genuine lovers of JCF like myself who have been duped by Jim Abbott the crook, into parting with money, which in some cases they could ill afford. Not only myself but several others have supplied hard evidence that there is only one Jim Abbott and that he is the one who has stolen the money. Just because he may have helped Jackson doesn’t excuse him then going on to steal from people by falsely trading on his memory.

Comment by Bob Howe — August 15, 2009 @ 3:44 pm
56. Bob, I don’t know you, so excuse me if I step out of line in my reply. Have you ever prepared a book for publication? I have. Do you know how much that might cost? Let’s say it will probably be a four figure sum, in sterling or US dollars – an order of magnitude more than the 30 bucks you and I MAY HAVE lost. There are maybe 3 ways to fund publishing outlay: self-funding, which I used for my book project; an advance from the publisher, which presupposes big demand; and advance orders, which Jim must have chosen as his option. He then was faced with the death of his publisher, which would discourage most folk.
Of course I don’t know the full story, but in Scotland we usually say someone is innocent until proved guilty. 30 bucks -what’s that? a tankful of fuel? dinner at an average restaurant? Get some perspective! Sure I’d hope that there is a book at the end of the road, but if there isn’t, there are 2 new JCF tracks to download from this site. One is excellent, while the “Frankie and Johnny” is pretty mediocre (Pat Boone style?). I suspect the promised CD would also be a mixed bag!
I’m with Andrew (6th July 2009 posting) on this controversy, but like Jim Abbott I will go AWOL unless someone has any real news! There is enough negativity already.

Comment by Graeme Orr — August 19, 2009 @ 9:55 am
57. I don’t know you either so please forgive me for also speaking out of line. There are some of us out here far less fortunate than you, through no fault of our own, to whom $30 is a significant sum of money out of an invalidity benefit cheque. As for $1000 dollars compared to $30 in relative magnitude, the argument is meaningless if you have very little yourself. There are some of us out here to whom “A tankful of petrol” and “an average meal in a restaurant” are occasional luxuries, where a decision to buy a book involves making other sacrifices. If you were ever unlucky enough to be in this position perhaps your perspective would also be different. As for innocent until proven guilty, there is more than enough evidence in this column for a person of even average intelligence to deduce the truth about Jim Abbott. I thought good authors had to be accomplished researchers so I am somewhat surprised at your stoical defence of the deceit practised by this person in light of the evidence, unless you are a personal friend. I have several Scottish friends of long standing who place great store on honesty and integrity and to your credit I notice that you chose to self finance your book even though it was obviously difficult, rather than soliciting money from people by pretnding that it was finished. This contrasts very sharply with the denials and lies from JA in this column after the event. His publisher died, how sad compared to the numerous close friends and relatives of mine who have died in the last six months. Because I have very little does that make it OK for me to lie and steal from other people without any thought of how little they might have, I think not. This forum arose as a consequence of Jim Abbott’s decision to go AWOL in December 2008 from answering polite enquiries from people who had paid him in good faith for books they hadn’t received and if that’s too negative for you I’m sorry, that’s the truth. There is no MAYBE about the ripoff only DEFINITELY I’m afraid.

Comment by Bob Howe — August 20, 2009 @ 12:57 am
58. Graeme,

You are making assumption that are not correct. Jim got the book deal first, then the owner died. Then he decided to self publish and set up the paypal account. Then he had some sort of bizarre editorial/contributor problems. Then he invented the ‘other’ Jim Abbott. As if one could cover one’s ass with the internet and email trail! And yes, Bob is right, 30 bucks is a lot to some, you’re fortunate not to be there. And if ever you find anywhere where I can get a tank refill for only 30 bucks, please let me know. And I’m sorry you seem satisfied with the two downloads, which may be the tip of an iceberg. We don’t know what Jim has. Maybe 20 tracks? The ‘Pat Boon’ track shows a very confident performer, a young man who had just gone through his first hell and come out the other side.
And the book does exist, I got a draft – around 250 pages. Minus some important stuff. Only one guy on the planet can fix things up at this moment in time.

Geoff

Comment by Geoff — August 22, 2009 @ 10:32 am
59. Thanks Geoff and Bob for your comments. Geoff, you seem to have the history pretty accurately – I just can’t understand how you have a draft book MS and yet no way to get Jim Abbott back on the case!
My experience of “folkies” is usually of rather too honest, rather naive and disorganised people rather than crooks and swindlers. Jim Abbott has after all pledged (i the pages of MOJO magazine) to write this JCF book. Maybe he needs help rather than brickbats?
To address 3 other points: first, the book I had published was actually a collection of my mother’s writing, and we used her funds to pay for that. There were many frustrations along the way, and the whole project took a year or so. It seemed a simple matter at the outset!
Second, I am not poor but I surely am not rich either. My little ’98 Skoda costs about £30 for a tank of petrol here so I’d guess $30 would pay for a tank of America gasoline? I sometimes go for a Glasgow curry, which costs £15 including a drink.
Thirdly, JCF’s “Frankie & Johnny” is watery stuff compared with John Hurt or Furry Lewis on the same song, but that’s my personal taste. If anyone out there needs a fix of sad songs from a living folk-singer with a tough life-story, can I recommend Jackie Leven’s “Men in Prison” CD which will also cost well under $30! Peace!

60. A PS to my earlier posting. It occurs to me that Bob is upset at the loss of his money for a non-existent book. Geoff however has, or has seen an MS for the book. Geoff, would you agree to copy this MS (if you still have it) and forward it to Bob? I’ll happily send the cash for copying and postage. I might even copy the “Men in Prison” CD!
May I also add that “Jimmy Clay” is a fine song and well covered by JCF. Let’s hope that a better quality recording of it turns up!

66. OK, this discussion forum has gone quiet. I can’t offer any breakthrough news, but I did pick up a 2nd hand copy of MOJO (UK music) magazine, May 2009 issue, which has a feature about Jackson C. Frank. The author of the article, one Jim Allen, adds some new nuggets of information, and had help from Jim Abbott in preparing the article, which ends: “A million thanks to Jim Abbott, who aided immeasurably in putting this story together”. The article states that a book is in preparation (provisional working title “Crippled Singer”) although a web search of these words, linked to Jackson C Frank, only shows that it’s a phrase from the song “Prima Donna of Swans”.
I’ve been listening to the second of the two-CD set of JCF issued by Castle Music in 2003. This consists of early and late demos, some very low-fi but all the more charming for that. There are two versions of “Tumble in the Wind”, a deceptively simple song with a metronomic guitar accompaniment sung by a wheezy, sickly old Jackson. It evoked Johnny Cash’s recording of “Hurt”, or bluesman John Hurt’s last sessions. The singer is “fixing to die”, but is setting out his last testament to the world.
There is more useful web-based information now on JCF: a Wikipedia entry, several webpages etc. What surprises me is that there is not more on-line record of his last years, where he was reputedly singing around Woodstock. One would expect more photos or recordings to have survived than the ones which illustrate the websites and articles mentioned.

Comment by Graeme Orr — May 18, 2010 @ 8:50 am
67. PS to the above: “Crippled singer” is in fact a phrase from the 1970 song “Marlene”. Silly me.
I plan to write to Jim Allen and draw his attention to this web forum. Maybe he can make the other Jim (Abbott) aware that we now have confirmation of the continuing book project. Not that the material will be easy to research, when many of JCF’s contemporaries from the 60s folk boom are either no longer with us, or may find, as I do, that one’s memories of events over 40 years ago become increasingly vague. It would be nice however if some clips from the rediscovered JCF material were placed on-line for us all to sample!

Comment by Graeme Orr — May 31, 2010 @ 7:51 pm
68. I also fell for the book scam. If anything ever comes of it, i’d love to hear from anyone who has any info! I’ve waited patiently for 2 years and heard nothing so I assume it’ll never come.. it was worth stumbling upon this page for the 2 unheard JCF songs though. He’s wonderful.

Comment by Rae — July 2, 2010 @ 9:43 pm
69. Well, I too was ripped off, but I’m still here. I check every once in a while and even though I probably gave my money away to someone not affiliated with the book I am more upset that the CD of unreleased songs is probably also made up. More than ripping me off however much money, I am most upset about the promise of more songs being unsubstantiated or an outright lie. With the release of the new pictures (which look professionally taken) and the two new songs, I really had my hopes up for more material. I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s definitely not right.

Comment by Robert — July 29, 2010 @ 7:38 pm
70. What really confuses me also is that the myspace page which is “authorized” also is peddling the book. Plus they took all of the comments down saying that its possibly a sham. The pictures on that page though are ones that I have never seen before and led me to believe that whoever had put it together had material that was unreleased. How can we go about looking into this?

Comment by Robert — July 29, 2010 @ 8:05 pm
71. No reply as yet from Jim Allen of MOJO to my letter of enquiry following the magazine article published over a year ago.
There is no result from a Google search for the book under the provisional title “Crippled singer”. I guess it’s as much wishful thinking (on all sides!!) as a scam. Too bad.

73. At hast some hard information (as in “hard luck”, however). Yesterday I went to a concert in Edinburgh by Bert Jansch, who knew Jackson Frank in the 60s, and included “Blues run the game” and “My name is Carnival” in his set. I approached Bert after his show with questions, as in an e-mail exchange with Jim Abbott 2 years ago (when his e-mail was jacksoncfrankbook@yahoo.com) he claimed to have set up an interview with Bert for the book. Bert said he had great doubts as to whether such a book would ever appear, denied having provided any input to the book, and doubted the existence of new, undiscovered recordings for a CD. As he said, nobody has heard them, nor knows their quality.
So it looks increasingly as though Jim Abbott is indeed a fabulist, a spinner of stories to mask the absence of the story he’d like to tell. Al I can suggest is: Jim, if you read this, your options are running out. There aren’t so many prime sources out there who could contribute more to the basic JCF biography we have from MOJO, the sleeve-notes to the double CD, and Wikipedia. JCF is dead, as are Sandy Denny, John Peel, and other contemporaries. Bert Jansch didn’t give the impression of wanting to help. There remains the issue of the “discovered” tracks, which may involve copyright and ownership issues – if they exist. There is a music industry out there, always on the lookout for early demos of “lost” folk stars such as Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Derroll Adams, etc: why not leave it to the professionals? There remains the mystery of what became of the lost 1960s John Peel session tape with JCF, which Gideon Coe was supposed to play on BBC Radio 6, but the broadcast item was cancelled.
MOJO magazine’s files may contain letters responding to the Jackson Frank article from May 2009 – and their Jim Allen credits “invaluable help” from Jim Abbott. Seen any copy CDs during the interview, Jim? I give up, but it was a nice dream while it lasted.

Comment by Graeme Orr — August 27, 2010 @ 3:01 pm
74. Jackson tracks thought to exist (and I have no reason to doubt this). Whether they will ever see the light of day is another question. Too many ownership/copyright problems. I understand Sanctuary have some license deals with the BBC, problem is, who knows where the Peel session is? The BBC wiped their copy.

Here is the list:
Two songs and one part song recorded London 1965.
Reel to Reel with at least one radio performance, USA, before London.
A song ‘Juliet’, recorded Ulster Park NY 1970.
A couple of Elvis songs.
John Peel’s Night Ride session, ‘Jimmy Clay’ + others.
Ten songs from 1962, from college days.
Studio sessions with Happy Traum, Woodstock.
Home Movie of Jackson and wife Elaine.

Comment by Geoff — August 30, 2010 @ 5:28 pm
75. Geoff, are you and I the last contributors to this forum? Thanks for the list of unissued JCF songs. Jim Abbott claimed in our e-mail correspondence of 2 years ago to have a private tape of the Peel session, for what that’s worth.
Meanwhile, I notice that Jim Allen of MOJO met Jackson in 1998. He hasn’t replied to my letter to him c/o MOJO – it may be that the article – and his contact with Jim Abbott – date from some years prior to May 2009 when his article appeared in the magazine.
Good luck in your sleuthing – the trail has gone dead here.

Comment by Graeme Orr — September 3, 2010 @ 12:10 pm
76. Hi everyone, I’m embarrassed to admit I have just discovered Jackson’s music. I bought the album a while ago on the back of that Mojo article last year and have only just listened to it. Needless to say, I have been astonished that this album has been so neglected: Blues Run The Game and My Name Is Carnival being particular favourites. I prefer Sandy Denny’s version of You Never Wanted Me but hadn’t realised it had been Jackson’s song originally.

I am saddened to hear about the book situation. It is certainly something I would have bought myself had I discovered him sooner so I sympathise with those of you who appear to have lost money. Jim Abbot should not have taken any money until the book was ready but I hope he can redeem himself. Jackson C. Frank’s life was, from the limited knowledge I have, an incredible story and I look forward to discussing more about it with you.

Kindest regards, David

I HAVE been making inquiries for material about Jackson, because I AM writing a book, and will have it published next spring. You are then welcome to purchase a copy from your local bookstores. Along with the many new STUDIO tracks that I have uncovered, that is.
WHile I am sorry for those of you who were apparently scammed by someone, it was not me. It makes no sense to me that someone would try to do something like that with a niche ubject like Jackson, but stranger things have happened.

Jim

It’s now nearly Christmas and we still haven’t received the books we paid you for months ago. You were paid in good faith both for the book plus a CD (the carrot on the stick) which you are not now sending but not offering any partial refund in respect of. With the utmost repect I have to tell you that irrespective of the problems you have had we have been more than fair with you and are now starting to get annoyed. Please either send the 2 books or refund the money which you were paid via Paypal from Aidan Armitage.

Hi. Still in a bit if a delay. I have to work some stuff out with the publishers of his music before I can let the book out. It’s as frustrating to me as it is to you, I am sure. Sorry, but please be patient!

86. More correspondence from Jim 2008 last message first again from jimbob12404@yahoo.com. Notice he says he wouldn’t like anyone to think he’s pulling a fast one. Of course we wouldn’t think that would we Jim?

From Jim
Hi. You most certainly can check back. I dont want to have anyone think I am trying to pull a fast one. If you only knew what happened with this project—the original publisher died as we were making final arrangements and it has been one big hassle. The preorders were to pay for the printing but I didnt get enough so am doing it out of pocket, and then the issues with permissions and people contributing on a schedule.
Anyway, It should be on its way by the end of the month. Thanks for your patience

Hi Jim

That’s absolutely fine. My friend was getting worried because he hadn’t had an acknowledgement for his Paypal payment but if it’s all in hand no problem. As an ex music shop manager I know how deadlines sometimes slip back due to unforseen circumstances (usually in my experience a person beyond my control ). Do you want me to chack again in a while to see how it’s going or do you think it will be ready this month?

Kind regards

87. If you can’t find it and doubt my word, Jim Abbott’s email address jimbob12404@yahoo.com is clearly shown in the header of the last email in comment 85 which begins my friend Aidan.

Jim Abbott was asking for information about Jackson C Frank on another site in January 2012 as below. Notice any similarities in the writing style and the email address

“Jim Abbott posted this comment, or better a request, recently on this blog:”

I am looking for similar info and reviews of Jackson C Frank, from the same era–1965 and 1968. If you have any at all, or can locate them , please contact me at jimbob12404@yahoo.com I was Jack’s freidn and guardian and am trying to fnish a book about him. I cannot afford to go to the UK so I have the internet to work with. Thank you.

Sean Body, publisher/owner of Helter Skelter, passed away recently from leukemia at age 42. We were in the middle of doing the deal to publish my book about Jackson C. Frank, which he had asked me to write. I finished the book and am looking for a new publisher to pick it up. I do have a small self-published run including a CD of unheard stuff but I really would like a publisher to pick it up. Its a good, detailed book, an interesting story and a lot of photos come with it, never seen before.

I can be reached at jimbob12404@yahoo.com

The preorders can be paid via Paypal at jacksoncfrankbook@yahoo.com The price info is 30 dollars US or 15 Pounds UK and will be shipped around Sept 1. unless a publisher steps forward.

91. Copy below of an article from Folk Roots forum WED JULY 30th 2008 where Jim Abbott says that his book is finished complete with CD and is available for preorder at Paypal address jacksoncfrankbook@yahoo.com at a cost of £15 to be sent out around September 2008 unless he gets a publishing deal. On this forum comment number 9 in April 2009 Jim Abbott claims that the book is nowhere near finished 11 months later and still claims that to this day four years later??? Like numerous others Jim was paid by me in good faith in 2008 for two books £30 in total which you can see from my Paypal receipt above, books which he never sent and then subsequently stopped answering emails.

92. from http://www.myspace.com/jacksoncfrank/blog/416490408. 26th July 2008 again asking for preorder payments to be made to Paypal address jacksoncfrankbook@yahoo.com.

Jim Abbott (the friend that has rescued Jackson from the streets and the owner of his work) IS WRITING a book:

“Blues Run the Game: The Tragedy of Jackson C. Frank”
(unofficial title)

Likely the only biography of the legendary musician that will ever be written.

A CD with unknown music of Jackson is included with the preorders of this book: It will have his Peel Session material and the Ulster Park song.

The final print will come…

I believe Jim Abbott is fighting to get this book done..
Don’t worry, it will come to you.

You can preorder the book, 30$ or 15£, all payments go to the paypal address: jacksoncfrankbook@yahoo.com
Or wait till the book is done!

Enjoy friends!

Photo I recently discovered. Taken close to the time of the tragic fire. Jackson is the one next to the teacher.

Interesting also, reading about the fire. There was two girls named Marlene in the class with Jackson, one of them supposedly being is girlfriend. Makes that song pretty depressing to know that its most likely about one of them because both died from the fire.

94. Hey I’ve answered my own question here. According to jimbob12404@yahoo.com at the foot of this next article the Jim Abbott you see was a schoolteacher for six years(see paragraph five). Wasn’t the Jim Abbott who helped Jackson off the streets a schoolteacher?……… Must just be a coincidence that the fake Jim Abbott at jimbob12404@yshoo is a schoolteacher too. Small world.

95. I hope that the evidence I have painstakingly presented on this forum, finally blows apart once and for all the myth of the “second Jim Abbott” who coincidentally has the same email address as the real Jim Abbott ie jimbob12404@yahoo.com. Simple truth is he took our money and never sent the books. The saddest part for me in the whole business, is that Jackson C Frank, an artist whom I love and who made one of the greatest folk albums of all time, will never have a truthful bigraphy written about him. Even in death, he is robbed of his proper acclaim and respect by sordid underhand behaviour from someone he trusted with his legacy. If you want the CD fine but how could anyone have faith in the factual accuracy of a biography written by such a fantasist.

96. Here he is again trying advance funding for another book. It was about as sucessful as the last looking at the result. If you follow the various links through and arrive at Facebook we get Jim Abbott surprise surprise Jackson C Frank fan. Another imposter??? You should have left it alone Jim and not come back here on 28th September with another set of denials. That makes my blood boil.

98. Hello to anyone still reading entries to this forum: a treat awaits you on BBC Radio 4 next Tuesday 20th November at 11.30am. It’s a programme about Jackson Frank’s life and the BBC journalist will speak to people who knew him, including Jim Abbott. I for one will be listening….will there be an airing for the missing John Peel programme?

Comment by Graeme Orr — November 13, 2012 @ 8:46 pm
99. To follow up on my last posting: the BBC programme was most informative, and is available for a week on the BBC website to listen again (until 27th November). Jim Abbott is interviewed at some length, and mention is made of another person (Paul Mills I think) who is now putting together a book about JCF. I have taped the programme to share with friends.
To re-air the controversy about the Jim Abbott book that never happened: yes, I too had ordered the book, but I’ve put the matter behind me. Fact: Jim Abbott helped JCF in his last years; he may also have started to write a book, no easy task when its subject had his heyday over 40 years ago, a number of “chief witnesses” (Sandy Denny, Bert Jansch, John Martyn) are no longer with us, and (as the programme makes clear) JCF was always an enigmatic, elusive soul.
Meanwhile, Jim Abbott may be sitting on some unheard JCF archive. Short of his issuing limited-edition 180 gram vinyl albums of this rumoured material, if it’s of suitable quality, it is hard to imagine that Jim is sitting on a crock of gold, as file-sharing websites proliferate. So if you read this, Jim, thanks for your care for Jackson, but come clean about the music!

100. Hi, I’m an italian girl who’s trying to write a good monograph article about Jackson C. Frank for the music site which I write for. One week ago I’ve found this mail address – jimbob12404@yahoo.com – and I’ve contact Jim only to tell him how much I love JCF’s music. I’ve discovered that amazing record just three months ago and I’ve literally fall in love with. Jim answered to my mail really soon so I’ve decided to ask him if we could do a brief interview: hereunder you can read all messages we have sent each other.

Me: Hi Jim,

my name is Giulia, I live in Italy, I’m 26 years old and I collaborate with an Italian music site.

I’ve found your email address on a page about Jackson C. Frank and I’ve decided to write you because I’ve discovered his music only two months ago and I’ve literally fell in love with it.
I’ve been very impressed from his tragic and incredible history, and I think that the most sad aspect it’s that a lot of people never heard about him. Here in Italy, he’s practically unknown because when we talk about folk music we remember only of Nick Drake, but I think he was better of him.
In a very short time, the songs of Jackson C. Frank are become something truly deep and meaningful.
I wish that more people could know his beautiful music.

Thank you.

Jim: Thank you, Giulia.
Spread the word. and stay tuned–there will be new music from Jackson in the next year. 7 recently discovered studio tracks and more.

regards
Jim

Me: Thank you for having answered me.
I’ve would like to write a monograph article about him, and I was wondering if we could do a brief interview, just few questions. For me it would be an amazing opportunity to try to write a good article.

Jim: Sure. we can talk, or you can send me questions.

Me: Thank you for you courtesy, it would be perfect. For me it’s the same: we can talk via Skype or via email, tell me what way you prefer and when we can do that.

Jim: Im not a skyper, so email will work. Anytime.

I’ve sent the last email to Jim (with the questions of the interview) on 8th August. He didn’t answer me again, but Yesterday I’ve received another message from him. The object is: Need Your Urgent Help…..Jim Abbott

This message is coming to you with great depression due to my state of discomfort. I came down here to Manila, Philippines with my family for a short vacation but unfortunately, we were mugged and robbed at the park of the hotel where we stayed. All cash, credit cards and cell phones were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our lives and passports.

We’ve been to the embassy and the Police here but they’re not helping issues at all and our flight leaves in less than 12hrs from now but we are having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won’t let us leave until we settle the bills about $1,850 . Can you help us out? Get back to me immediately to let you know the easiest way to get the fund to us.

We are depressed at the moment.

Jim

This is CLEARLY a scam. Now I’m curious to see if he’ll send the answered back and if he’ll try to sell me the famous book about Jackson C. Frank. Anyway, I’ve read on amazon.com that the vinyl will be reissued on 17 of September, and the preorder is now available, but I’m a little bit worried about who is the real Jim Abbott. And I’m sad and sorry for Jackson, because I could never tell him how wonderful and deep his music is and because after his death someone is still trying to stain his memory. I’ve also search on google something about his daughter Angeline and his ex wife Elaine Sedgwick, but I didn’t find anything about them.

Comment by Giulia — August 11, 2013 @ 12:55 am
101. I hadn’t looked on this website for some time. The “lost bank card” etc is a classic scam which can’t be blamed on the guy (Jim?) who has his/her e-mail invaded. I guess the reissued vinyl is the original Columbia(?) 1965 album, which is a gem. No further word of Paul Mills and the book about JCF referred to in the BBC programme of a year ago. Keep checking on-line I guess.

Comment by Graeme Orr — August 28, 2013 @ 7:50 pm
102. For those still checking this, there are some new Jackson C. Frank songs (somehow) available on iTunes and Amazon. It’s being released by some company called Secret Records and will be available on vinyl in the US in November, or now on a 10″ if you don’t mind coughing up the extra pounds. Still confused where these “leaked” songs and pictures are coming from, but I’m just happy they are.

I agree, must be a doppelganger lol. The evil twin Jim Abbott 2 obviously took the money first time around, stole his brother’s rough draft and sent it to you. 108. I just came across a physical copy of “Jackson C Frank – Complete Recordings vol.3” on Ba Da Bing records – also web searches suggest a link to Piccadilly Records in Manchester, UK.
The Piccadilly Records website gives links to music clips of the tracks on all three volumes. Some tracks will be familiar to JCF-ologists, others not – some indeed are the lost Peel session.
I just should like to thank Jim Abbott and say, the 30 bucks’ advance on the book came out of an American chum’s pocket, not mine. Thanks Jim for at last getting some of the music out: I for one doubted its existence, and Bert Jansch, no less, doubted that a book about JCF would ever appear.
Good luck anyway, and hope you get some peace after all the flak.

117. I am really loving the theme/design of your blog.

Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility issues?
A handful of my blog visitors have complained about my blog not working correctly in Explorer but looks great
in Opera. Do you have any solutions to help fix
this issue?

122. Experts suggest that this aspect becomes vital in making
websites, as the visual appeal of the pages effectively send across ideas and messages
to the visitors. In fact, almost one third of the people in this industry are self-employed.
Remember that websites exuding authority on the
field through the overall appearance of the pages convince readers that the contents are worthy
of attention.
