A Rational Conversation Between Two Adults: Considering Devendra Banhart in Late 2008

http://www.thefader.com/ys_assets/0000/0130/DEVENDRA_1_main.jpgEvery Tuesday, FADER deputy editor Eric Ducker gets on instant messenger and “discusses” a subject that’s been on his mind with another member of our staff or a special guest.  Read his condensed (and emoticon-free) conversation with contributing writer Daniel Arnold, who handled all the text for the recent New Folk edition of F2, about Devendra Banhart and whether listeners are forsaking him even as he creates some of the most interesting work of his career.

  1. interesting.
but i must say.. to me, i dont know if i like these guys talking about him like that. devendra is so amazing, and it seemed in the beginning especially, that they were probing him. the things they said seemed pretentious.
Devendra will not fade away, because the people tat really do love him, understand and watch what he does. and yes, all the people i know that listen to devendra have liked him in the beginning up to smokey. this isn’t bob, and we all weren’t pissed when he went “electric” so to say…
    love you DB!!!

  2. amazing of course! and changing. not disrespecting the man in any way. just acknowledging some reality… wondering what he’s up to and where he’s off to.

  3. Devendra is a REAL artist–one who keeps exploring new territory, evolving, making different and more ambitious records, putting together better and more exciting live shows. Challenging your audience isn’t the easiest or most direct route to building a following, and while he may not hold on to all the fickle cognoscenti who embraced him at the beginning, his following will continue to grow–music this good finds it’s audience. I think “Seahorse” from Smokey is the best thing he’s ever done and Crippled Crow and Smokey are two my favorite records of the last decade. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

  4. it’s funny that people think he’s playing a joke, it feels more like he’s running out of steam hanging out with celebrity types and has very little left that’s interesting. megapuss, interesting? please!
