Naturalismo Party @ Big Pink

dsc_7377

Photos by Mike Pintar & Chad Eaton / Video by Erin Holly

Big Pink opened its doors to host a party of Naturalismo proportions — that is, good friends, good food, and great music. Here’s some videos and photos from the event, a celebration of Erin Holly’s birthday. A big thanks to Karla, Chad Eaton, Homesick Elephant, Matt Wright, and Ladywinter for playing some unforgettable songs. If you look closely, you’ll even see yours truly tearing up the harp!

Possessed By Paul James

Possessed By Paul James

Possessed By Paul James is the stage name of multi-instrumentalist Konrad Wert. He was raised Mennonite with Amish roots in the swamps of Immokalee, Florida, but has since lived in Northwest Africa, Washington D.C., California, Central America, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas.

Wert’s performances are so energetic that he could easily be mistaken for a small crowd. His songs are very honest. Not only are they completely personal and sincere, but they transcend identity and touch on the human condition.

“Possessed is just… possessed by experiences,” Wert says. ”…I connect with that, with the beauty of the ugliness. People have used the word primal, and I’ve started to appreciate it.”

You can pick up a copy of his most recent album, Cold And Blind, here on CD or LP.

Pet Sounds A Capella

I’ve been wanting to post this up for awhile and with the recent heat wave it seems like the prefect time to score your summer days with it. I’d hate to try and put words to how incredibly beautiful this vocal tracks only rendition of Pet Sounds is,  so I’ll just let you listen for yourself. It really makes you gain another tier of appreciation for the album and you’ll most certainly never hear it quite the same way again. It’s amazing how full the album sounds even when stripped of its innovative and lush instrumentation. The brief silences on the album are best filled with the right scenery or interaction. This is essential…

The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds (A Capella Version)

This is the 4th disc of the Pet Sounds Sessions you can buy it here.

[ Naturalismo Exclusive ] Mi & L'au Announce New Album, Release Videos

milau-goodmorning-cover-tranche1Mi & L’au is music for when space seems more apt than sadness. When silence matters more. Beneath our tongues and our clothes and our words, we don’t really know how to speak, or act, or think; we’re never quite sure how to feel because feeling is tied to identity and identity is tied to emotion and emotion isn’t absolute. It’s nuanced. But Mi & L’au captures the gradient nicely. Their music is a plane we all drift through, it’s a place we don’t quite understand, it’s a language we all know but seldom speak. It’s not easy to live there, but it’s refreshing to experience.

I’m proud to present one of four new “music videos” from Mi & L’au’s upcoming record Good Morning Jokers — set to be released at the end of May on Spain’s Borne Recordings. I’ll debut the other videos in the weeks to come but, until then, enjoy “Clown.”

April Mixtape from J. Emery Blatchley

01501u1preview

April’s halfway over but the spring has barely begun. We’ve only scratched the surface on the wonders that this most hopeful month has to offer: birds chirping, grass growing, crickets calling. It’s all here, it all smells good. Today, we’re lucky to have another mix from J. Emery Blatchley. This time ’round, we’re taking a trip through time and towards the Southern regions of our country. We’re staring down the sunset with our eyes all squinty and hopeful, anxious for summer to come.  It’s hot and humid, full of fiddles and sorrow, banjos and cicadas. In the world of this mix, though, summer’s here. Enjoy.

Deerhunter to release new EP in May

rainwater

Deerhunter are set to release Rainwater Cassette Exchange, a new 5 song EP in early May. Rainwater Cassette Exchange was recorded in Ferbruary 2009 at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn, NY. You can hear the great new title track below. After catching two Deerhunter shows a few weeks ago I can say that I am really anticipating this upcoming release as Bradford Cox is seemingly now living up to the doo wop enthused sound that he said would appear on his last album.

Collie Ryan

Collie Circa 1973

Collie Ryan privately pressed three records in 1973 with the help of some friends at New Age Farms in Lompoc, California; The Giving Tree, Indian Harvest, and Takin’ Your Turn ‘Round the Corner of Day.

Eventually, Ms. Ryan made her way out to the desert in West Texas. She currently lives about 12 miles outside of Terlingua without electricity or running water (all of her water is hauled from a nearby creek). The area around Terlingua is home to a sparse, unstructured community of outsiders, artists, and back-to-the-landers fashioning their lives out of the honesty of the desert. Collie paints mandalas, meditations on the circular center from which life is based. In 2001, she recorded a new CD, Letters from Home, which one can order by e-mailing her friend Bob Smith. She also recently gave an interview.

The Sebastian Speaks label has collected some of the best tracks from her 1973 albums for a new release entitled The Hour Is Now. The tracks were pressed to LP from the original master tapes without any intermediate digital step, resulting in an entirely analog product. The Hour Is Now is limited to 1000 copies and can be purchased here.
