You may remember in the months past we debuted a couple of short, home-made videos made by Mi & L’au to introduce some of the new songs from their album Good Morning Jokers, out now on Borne Records. If you haven’t given this album a listen, I highly suggest you do. It takes the sound of their debut to a whole new level: fleshed out, rich, and expansive, without sacrificing the space and patience that first enamored me. This new video, made by Mathieu Linote, takes you on a journey ona skull-faced horse leading through surreal ‘scapes. Digging the horns right now.
Brightblack Morning Light’s Nathan D Shineywater has launched Hearted Hand Cassettes and will be releasing a new cassette EP in November. The cassettes will be hand duplicated using solar power and 100% of the proceeds go to the artist.

With the myriad of doo-wop and soul tinged low fi summer tunes this summer it seems appropriate to mention Gino Washington, who is one of my favorite soul artists that although lesser known is still incredible nonetheless. Straight out of Detroit, Gino Washington was known for being a bit more raw, soulful and Rock n’ Roll than his contemporaries-his career was only stunted by being drafted to fight in the war just before going national. To my ear he sounds somewhere between Arthur Alexander and younger Sam Cooke, but still stands on his own.

A grittier and darker song.
…and my favorite Arthur Alexander(mostly known from Beatles/Stones cover fame) track for good measure:
I don’t know why it doesn’t dawn on me more often to post up random things I’m listening to that aren’t always the easiest to track down. I think it’s due to our readership being pretty damn musically knowledgeable. For example, last weeks rad commenter who mentioned the similarities between the Real Estate Jam I posted and this (totally new to me) amazing song by Rino Gaetano, a famous 60′s Italian musician.
Moving on, I was always drawn in by the amazing Nashville Skyline opener Girl From North County where Dylans dramatically different croon makes its first appearance and is only made all the more intriguing when Cash’s vocals come forth a minute in. For awhile I thought that was it for the Dylan and Cash collaboration, but delving just barely deeper into the lost Dylan album legacy you find Land of the free home of the brave, 25tracks featuring Dylan and Cash’s lost (album) collaboration. There’s something about these recordings that make a lot of sense right now. Plenty to read about them here..but more importantly you can download it right here:
This song and video just totally NAIL it. Watch as Jeffro Tull..er Jeff the brotherhood effortlessly rock out on one of the catchiest songs to come out of this whole newfangled return to not-quite-garage-garage movement. Winding its way through every low budget cheesed out rock n roll video moment ever all without taking itself seriously for a moment, this is without a doubt the best video I’ve seen since yesterdays flame throwing madness by Family Portrait.

His new album Heavy Days is out October 31st on Infinity Cat
First up is a song by the Bay Area’s Norse Horse, that with its shimmery guitar and summer shuffle percussion, probably should have made it onto Copper Tones, . They definitely are a band to keep an eye on that hasn’t gotten too much press yet. It kind of sounds like the song was originally sample based then later reconstructed after by playing it live with instruments…a sound that I think is going to really dominate this year and will probably be mastered best by the up coming Panda Bear releases.

Next is Forest Fire’ssong I make windows off their album Survival, that was released for free earlier this year. There’s something kind of endearing about their ramshackle Crazy Horsesque meandering guitar lines that perfectly captures that end of summer feeling… definitely good road trip music.

I know i’ve been pretty incessantly hyping the Underwater Peoples bands but this new video for Family Portrait’s Mega Secrets is too great not to post up. I’ve really yet to tire of the song after repeated listens and the home made flame thrower clips that they’ve used to accompany it really make me feel pretty nostalgic for those younger days spent, well…lucky to have my fingers still.
Jana Hunter and her band (as yet unnamed) are leaving Baltimore after many months of constant, sickening grind and search tactics to try and wield before a live audience the album they’ve wrought. It’s a huge departure from the work Hunter released solo, as Hunter was able to embrace, through her group, her less obvious influences: Faust, Wire, GBV, and whatever, these things don’t even mean that much in terms of forming a sound image. It’s all just to say that this a mean band, not an intimate cave, so expect a lot of noise and beats in addition to Hunter’s signature sonic topography: the hiss, the haunt, and the weird are all still there. She’s backed by Will Adams on guitar, Geoff Graham on bass and vocals, and Abe Sanders on drums. This tour finds the band performing in preparation for recording the album, as yet untitled, which will likely be released sometime in early 2010, and touring with close Baltimore friends Crazy Dreams Band, who will sometime soon release their second record on Portland’s Holy Mountain.
