Updated: The Boys Next Door – Shivers

What odd and unfortunate timing to post this clip a day before songwriter/guitarist Rowland S. Howard of “Shivers” died of liver failure. Apparently the version Howard wrote¬† (at age 16!) was a much more subtle and slower self-loathing number upon its creation. R.I.P. Howard.

What an incredible video for this early Nick Cave track.

Naturalismo end of Autumn/yearly wrap up mixtape coming in a few days.

In the meantime go checkout the great new mix put out by Underwater Peoples and courtesy of Chocolate Bobka (only available for a few days):

  4. this video is from the greatest punk movie of all time, “Dogs in Space” it’s about inxs singer micheal hutchens who (at the tender age of 18) plays himself at the age of 15. at one point in the movie micheal and his crew go to this bar in melbourne and the boys next door are playing on stage. so awesome. i wish this would be released on dvd.

  6. Really don’t mean to be rude, but the above post about Dogs In Space is wildly inaccurate.

Hutchence plays not ‘himself at 15’ but Melbourne musical identity Sam Svejanka, singer for The Ears. When the band go to the pub, it’s Marie Hoy, of Thrush and the Cunts and later NO who sings a version of shivers.

All this and more can be found in the soon to be released documentary “we’re living on dog food” which looks at the Melbourne scene and the making of Dogs In Space, and features a section where the evolution of the song Shivers is discussed in depth by Rowland, and features film of him singing it with The Boys Next Door, which is quite incredible to see.

  8. Not at all sir – I’m just a nerdy fan. And an Australian, so it’s my ‘cultural heritage’ – and indeed Dogs In Space has been rather hard to see.

there’s big revival of interest in Australian Punk and the art of the late 70s and early 80s about, do have ahunt, there’s some fun stuff
