A / b : End of Autumn / Yearly Wrap Mixtape

Download A / b Mixtape 1 & 2

(To download the mixes individually see below)

I meant to put this mix out awhile ago and ever since it’s just been dragging on accumulating more and more songs that as time goes on I feel are more applicable to where things are.  This mix is a bit more scattered than others I’ve made and really is just chasing to weave some solid melodies together while grafting together the influences of what I feel like is about to boil over contemporarily in music. The two mixes have a pretty distinct feeling from each other. The A side would be the influence and the B side tunes I feel like could have only been crafted at this moment in musical evolution. AKA, some new tracks(A)/some old(b). In fact, it just dawned on me that perhaps the analogy is in order because it increasingly seems the single is back by some miraculous turn of events. Even an E.P. can seem long winded at this point-kidding-but there’s something pretty magical about hearing an artists individual song of the moment, at that moment.

I’m sure at least a track or five on it would please just about anyone. Heck you might even enjoy it in its entirety! Just glad I finally whittled it down from the original 105 songs…Also, I reckon it is more of a digital era mix, being 30+ songs long, but for those wanting to take it in CD form the split of the two mixes will fit on 2 CDs comfortably.

Highlights:

Beach Boys (Brian Wilson) – Unknown Harmony ( 1968, unreleased)

Brian Wilson’s swan song, in a way..total revelation. This is a song that epiphanies are made of. I’m kind of unhealthily addicted to it.

Ellie Greenwich – Baby

It seemed as though Ellie was aware that she was just as capable if not more so than the artists she wrote for to rise to artist recognized stardom herself yet almost avoided it at every turn for some reason, even going as far to cast her younger sister in the puppet role of lip syncing her solo material live for a brief period. This single, Baby, which seemingly became an afterthough in her unstoppable songwriting prowess wake is just as much a classic as anything she ever penned. Yes, even Be My Baby.

Joe Meek – The Bublight

Controversial, often dismissed and downright brilliant. I think Joe Meek is the most underrated producer of all time and just seemed to be one of those lucky few who could literally channel music through himself. This song is off his only solo album I Hear a New World which varies from the essential to the challenging. Even more interesting about him is that most likely some of his best work is as yet unreleased some 40+ years later, with thousands of recordings known as The Tea Chest Tapes remaining unreleased (and under private unknown ownership.) Also odd to note is how similarly to one of the other great producers…his tale unfortunately ends in death and murder as well.
