Their website says, “We are based in NYC but our tunes are not.” Though it’s true that their “heavy mellow” soundscape feels more apropos to a reflective fireside chat than a BedStuy loft rave, Family Band’s darkened, claustrophobic atmosphere seems a fitting offspring of, or at least a logical reaction to, the shoulder-to-shoulder struggle of winter in the Northeast. Primarily a husband and wife duo, the Family Band explores moods ranging from the funereal to the fanciful: early-70′s acid folk leads make way for glowing pedal steel washes, harmonies for caterwauls, fingerpicked arpeggios for kick-drummed, palm-muted melodies. The mood is mercurial, lively, open to flight but also firmly grounded in its convictions.
