Keepaway

After scouring for hours and hours for some new S.F. tunes to relish and spread on here, I couldn’t help but think more artists here just need to let loose a bit more and experiment.  For as strange of a place San Francisco often is, you’d think more artists would embrace it more and get a bit crazier than the steady flow of great but sometimes limited range of garage-inspired tunes.  Anyways, maybe next search or show will be more fruitful. I ended up craving to listen to one of the catchier singles I’ve heard this year courtesy of the new band Keepaway that I’ve been meaning to post from the first time I heard its instantly infectious opening loop several weeks ago. Keepaway formed from the former SF ashes of Frank Lyon’s other more folk-oriented project Ship, whom he also collaborated with multi-talented (understatement) artist Dave Wilson. Nicholas Nauman also lends a keen hand to this track with some great guitar work… keep an ear out for more tunes from these dudes.

Joanna Newsom announces new album's arrival date

Looks like Joanna Newsom has released the date of her next album, possibly named Have One on Me, in an ambiguous post on Drag City’s website with the following cartoon:

Seems to me that it’s implying a release date of 2-23-10? Though it could just be a teaser drumming up excitement for it…

Further – California Bummer

Will someone please bring back Surf Gaze? Further’s early 90′s musical meanderings are so on par again right now. Please continue to bear with me as I try and trace some influences of Mr. Pink leading up to his next release which is sure to see him finally garnering the respect he deserves. Also, he just got the classic 180 from Pitchfork, “Over the past couple of years, something strange has become clear: West Coast lo-fi pop weirdo Ariel Pink is a seriously influential figure in indie music.” Yep, that’s probably as close as you’re going to get to them eating their words and ramping up to champion him in their monopolistic artist making or breaking machine.

New Video: Animal Collective – Brothersport

Actually captures the song pretty well with its paint dripping, children wandering, cartoon conscience visuals!

Also, you should really checkout that song below from Pure Ecstasy and go out to one of his current tour dates if you can…he really seems like a new musical force to be reckoned with. Such solid melodies and great vocals. In the zone at his show yesterday at Aquarius I caught myself thinking he’s mining a different aural element of Mr. B Wilson than Panda Bear does. Of course that’s oversimplifying as Pure Ecstasy seems to draw upon many influences, but it’s still great to hear someone changing it up a bit.

Harpo Marx – Guardian Angels (1945)//Lucky Dragons

1:36 and onwards. Distortion is so much better when it’s analogue and string based.

Something about it makes me think this recently reworked Lucky Dragons song/interactive performance belongs with it:

Family Band: Miller Path

Their website says, “We are based in NYC but our tunes are not.” Though it’s true that their “heavy mellow” soundscape feels more apropos to a reflective fireside chat than a BedStuy loft rave, Family Band’s darkened, claustrophobic atmosphere seems a fitting offspring of, or at least a logical reaction to, the shoulder-to-shoulder struggle of winter in the Northeast.  Primarily a husband and wife duo, the Family Band explores moods ranging from the funereal to the fanciful: early-70′s acid folk leads make way for glowing pedal steel washes, harmonies for caterwauls, fingerpicked arpeggios for kick-drummed, palm-muted melodies. The mood is mercurial, lively, open to flight but also firmly grounded in its convictions.

A / b : End of Autumn / Yearly Wrap Mixtape

Download A / b Mixtape 1 & 2

(To download the mixes individually see below)

I meant to put this mix out awhile ago and ever since it’s just been dragging on accumulating more and more songs that as time goes on I feel are more applicable to where things are.  This mix is a bit more scattered than others I’ve made and really is just chasing to weave some solid melodies together while grafting together the influences of what I feel like is about to boil over contemporarily in music. The two mixes have a pretty distinct feeling from each other. The A side would be the influence and the B side tunes I feel like could have only been crafted at this moment in musical evolution. AKA, some new tracks(A)/some old(b). In fact, it just dawned on me that perhaps the analogy is in order because it increasingly seems the single is back by some miraculous turn of events. Even an E.P. can seem long winded at this point-kidding-but there’s something pretty magical about hearing an artists individual song of the moment, at that moment.

I’m sure at least a track or five on it would please just about anyone. Heck you might even enjoy it in its entirety! Just glad I finally whittled it down from the original 105 songs…Also, I reckon it is more of a digital era mix, being 30+ songs long, but for those wanting to take it in CD form the split of the two mixes will fit on 2 CDs comfortably.

Highlights:

Beach Boys (Brian Wilson) – Unknown Harmony ( 1968, unreleased)

Brian Wilson’s swan song, in a way..total revelation. This is a song that epiphanies are made of. I’m kind of unhealthily addicted to it.

Ellie Greenwich – Baby

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It seemed as though Ellie was aware that she was just as capable if not more so than the artists she wrote for to rise to artist recognized stardom herself yet almost avoided it at every turn for some reason, even going as far to cast her younger sister in the puppet role of lip syncing her solo material live for a brief period. This single, Baby, which seemingly became an afterthough in her unstoppable songwriting prowess wake is just as much a classic as anything she ever penned. Yes, even Be My Baby.

Joe Meek – The Bublight

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Controversial, often dismissed and downright brilliant. I think Joe Meek is the most underrated producer of all time and just seemed to be one of those lucky few who could literally channel music through himself. This song is off his only solo album I Hear a New World which varies from the essential to the challenging. Even more interesting about him is that most likely some of his best work is as yet unreleased some 40+ years later, with thousands of recordings known as The Tea Chest Tapes remaining unreleased (and under private unknown ownership.) Also odd to note is how similarly to one of the other great producers…his tale unfortunately ends in death and murder as well.

Breakfast in Fur

It’s tough transitioning from the sunny West to the romantic European autumn to the bleakness of Brooklyn winter but here I am making the most of runny noses and arctic air. Bands like Breakfast in Fur, however, make my recent move to New York all the more exciting. There’s some summer in these songs but there’s also a somnambulistic stare out across the subway tracks. It’s a lazy dance amongst the band-members. It’s a collusion of elements both twee and stone-faced, fun-loving and intellectual. When I listen to these songs I feel both nostalgic and optimistic, but maybe that’s just where I am right now.
