San Francisco, 1990. The Space Lady. Vashti In space

Late 60′s creationist duo who wrote a “drugged out” psychedelic album as a thinly veiled attempt at converting/saving hippies from their drug induced enlightenment. It’s an extremely catchy and ramshackle wandering through what they seemed to quickly cull from outsider psych music . Despite mimicking the music of those they cast as sinners throughout their songs ridiculous lyrics and psych meanderings, they have as good if not better grip on the genre.

Enough! I give up, not sure why I wasn’t going to post this. I guess it’s in part to it being my least favorite of Antonioni’s 60′s films, despite it being one of his most beautiful at times. I also already put together a video with one my favorite scenes from a film of his. Regardless, take in for a moment that this is the solo project of 17 year old Jack Colleran. It’s been on increasing rotation for the past week and is only gaining melodic momentum. I actually feel like this re-score for Zabrieske Point gives the footage some much needed new life.

Lol, I think I’ve lost it but it seems to be manifesting itself in good ways. And as long as I can convey music through images instead of words this format is a lot more intriguing. When I first heard this song I immediately envisioned some late 70′s futurism fetished out car chase scene slowly unfolding. Digging in pretty deep trying to find just the right footage to use for it I came across an old forgotten TV series called ‘Automan’ whose main character is a hologram hunk cop who relies on his ‘cursor’ to shape shift into vehicles relying on an advancement upon the technology recently invented the year prior for TRON (instead of hand painted they used reflective material and portable projectors). I figured it would be ripe with ridiculous car chase scenes but after viewing god knows how many episodes of it I slowly began to (lose it, I mean) realize that the series was not so much made for testosterone pumping men but middle aged horny women looking for some action in the early eighties. Needless to say that didn’t slow me down and I think this video turned out for the better because of it. I think the budget went entirely to the special effects scenes and cocaine because the edited clips and club scenes from the multiple episodes I used go surprisingly well together with the actors often wearing the same clothes in each episode.

No Joy – Pacific Pride [music video]

Hm, so I got tired of waiting for a suitable music video for this song to show up so I took it upon myself to cut one using a meshed set of selected vignettes from one of my favorite obscure psychedelic czech new wave films. Somehow I feel like this edit has more of a cohesive narrative than the movie did. hah.

Enjoy.

I caught these girls live a few months ago and was completely blown away by how good they sounded. Equal parts Cobain and Shields in terms of raw conjured live energy but really truly in their own unique headspace. They easily rocked harder than any dudes I’ve seen play live in quite awhile. It was also refreshing to see them perform because it seemed pretty free of any posturing. I heard a lot of mixed reviews about their live set before but I think that’s usually a good sign more often than not. I think that often when a band emerges and people have extremely polarized opinions one way or the other, the band is usually tapping into something new and less accessible and the early dismissers always try and play catch up later on.

Vision is a lonely word

Nothing is known about this Saffron track other than it was released some time in the late sixties. What I love most about it though is that it could just as easily be a Puro Instinct b-side from a few months ago or even a Kendra Smith track from the late 80′s. In the world of countless obscure cheesy psych songs those few lost gems that shine through are always that much more satisfying upon discovery.  Totally timeless:

Gillian Hills

English raised, born in Egypt and virtually unknown outside a few small acting rolls, Gillian Hills seemed to only crop up in fleeting beautiful vignettes throughout some of the 60′s more tantalizing filmic moments. Traipsing half nude with Jane Birkin around Antonioni’s Blow Up then showing up in the infamous popsicle scene in A Clockwork Orange it only makes sense that her unfairly rarely heard music would tempt on a similar level.  And it does:
