KP 1 // John Maus Phase Mix

I’ve been working on this mix for awhile now. A collection of songs that may, may not or most assuredly have influenced John Maus. Parallels, paths, phases abound trying to trace an influence wherever it can be found. A task I’ll readily admit is difficult with an artist like John Maus who carries such a distinctly unique sound. Enjoy (it at night).

Peter Davison is a world. This song from 1986 (and really his entire incredible discography) feels like it had a pretty profound effect on Maus’ own music.

An early John Maus demo that is such a revelation. Had to throw it on this mix.

When the chorus kicks in this song gets so infectiously heavy.

Cold as always, 1 and 1 will make 3…

John MausBeliever

Easily my favorite new song/video of the year.

Filmed and edited entirely on “analog and some extremely rare vintage video equipment” the new video for “Believer” takes us deep into the often blurry yet always determined world of John Maus.

‘Believer’ is taken from John Maus’ We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves out June 28th on Ribbon Music

“This is a good mix for parties! especially in the daytime, summer jams!”

Lost latin, obscure salsa…the soundtrack to your first warmer days.

Mesmerizing guitar, oceanic vocals. The House of Love’s Guy Chadwick on his only solo exploration. Fishbeckesque.

I think this track will serve as a good transition. I always try and DJ it but I feel like most of the time people don’t really fully get it. It is sorta bizarre, the vocals and guitar are straight warm inviting 70′s psychish pop but the background keys and percussion are pretty early 80′s celestially danceable. Sounds like the beginning of a good night out.
