I’ve been so enamored with this track lately, something about the weather. I know that Arthur Russell was with them for this album, but I’m still not entirely sure if it’s him singing? While on the track “More Real” it’s definitely Russell’s vocals, this song is a bit more ambiguous. Either way, great track and oddly reminiscent of Denim.

  1. I thought he simply played a supporting, instrumental role during his brief tenure in the band.

  2. The credits on discogs as well as a few other places credit Arthur Russell with Guitar, Vocals and Keyboards. If you listen to the two albums you’ll hear his vocals all over some of the tracks. Most of the time it’s in his more distinct later era “breathy” style but this track sounds a bit like his earlier 70’s style. This album has definitely grown on me…

  3. the opening of this song feels like a good, beautiful Smiths song off the first album : why not “I don’t owe you anything”?
i’m pretty sure it’s Ernie Brooks singing on this track, and Arthur comes in near the end of the song, with his oh so sensitive touch…”breathy” is a beautiful term.
The Necessaries were Brooks’ project at first and the other weirdo joined in…only to record some of the most beautiful vocals on the record. He’s lead singer on “more real”, “driving and talking”, “the finish line”(amazing opening! my guess is that on this track the strange-twisted-and-yet-funky-chorus-guitar is his…it comes from nowhere!)

    mucho mucho love

  4. Thanks so much for the clarification. I really love my readers, I’m always half terrified in their ability to humble me with their knowledge. I feel like Arthur’s vocal and guitar parts are so natural. Agreed about the Smiths resemblence. “More Real” is similarly confident and extremely underrated.
