Yosui Inoue – Senaka Made 45-fun [1982]

Listened to enough early eighties Japanese adult contemporary this week to last me for quite awhile but this Yosui Inoue track was a worthy payoff.

Colin Newman’s solo output is largely and criminally overlooked. After exhausting the Wire discography and generally being more fond of their more melodic moments his solo explorations throughout the 80′s are something of a godsend. Like any good solo undertaking, his best songs are found the deeper in you dig. I’ll never understand the phenomena, the only thing I can think of is that when those briefly cast aside peak creative moments occur they need just a bit longer to ruminate and by that time the record has been sent off. Like those same forces at play when your soon to be favorite album doesn’t make complete sense at first but leaves you longing for it all the same.

One of his more optimistic tracks, I think it’s my favorite song he’s ever done. It also just happens to be one of his hardest songs to find.

This song and video are both so beautiful that it was really starting to upset me that the music video for it on youtube was of such terrible quality. I finally sourced a good quality video for it and uploaded it to Know Phase’s ongoing Classics vimeo series. Stay tuned for rare short films and other essential music videos that are either unreleased or difficult to come by.

Apparently this track was recorded to coincide with the re-release of Fernwaerme in the early 90′s but the recording quality makes it hard to believe it was recorded at any other point other than within Rother’s transcendent eighties output. Regardless, I still think it’s one of the best songs he has recorded.

I’ve been waiting for just the right weather to post this album and with the air cooling down just a bit Lewis’ music begins to make that much more sense. L’amour uncovers that rare melodic balance of ethereal synths and soft hooked breathy vocals that finds a way to subtly weave its way into your head. The songs are strong enough that on first listen you’d think someone stole a tape from Arthur Russel’s unreleased archives. 1983, private press…nothing else is known about Lewis.
