Festival in the Forest Los Angeles Premiere Tonight!

ff1

In September of 2008, the San Francisco and Los Angeles scenes converged under the ancient redwoods of Big Sur to make music, make merry, and make love. Performers included local favorites Megapuss, Entrance Band, Fool’s Gold, The Parson Redheads, as well as fantastic sets from Port O’Brien, Beach House, Sleepy Sun, Sam Flax Kenner and more, all capped by a grand send-off from The Silver Jews [the brilliant, brooding presence of David Berman in one of the band's final performances was worth the price of admission alone]. With attendance for this Big Sur Fire Brigade benefit capped at a mere 400(!) campers, the event retained a remarkable purity and intimacy. Festival In The Forest captures this soon-to-be-legendary (((folkYeah!)))-curated show, and the zeitgeist of the California folk/rock scenes, much as Celebration at Big Sur did some 29 years prior. A true gem of a film, Festival in the Forest is not to be missed by music lovers or documentary enthusiasts.

Dark Was the Night

Just got wind of Dark Was the Night (i realize that this has probably already been plastered over the indie blogs), a pretty stunning compilation of artists contributing tracks that are unique to this comp. It’s going to be released February 17th. See below for more info, this is shaping up to be a pretty spiffy compilation (Antony, Iron & Wine, Beach House, Bon Iver, Cat Power, Jose Gonzalez [covering Nick Drake's "Cello Song" with The Books {!!!} ] ) for an excellent cause:

“A total of thirty-two exclusive tracks have been recorded for the compilation, which will be available as a double cd, triple vinyl and download album, with profits benefitting the Red Hot Organization – an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS.

Red Hot was founded on the premise that even without a cure, AIDS remains a preventable disease – using music as a great vehicle to raise both money and awareness for it. This is also the twentieth year of Red Hot as well as their twentieth compilation.”

Recollecting Festival in the Forest

I stepped over lazy rocks and roots weaving clumsily through the redwood trees beside me. The fog followed us across the footbridge as clouds would follow. Sleepy and silent, we parked the car beside a brook, with a yawn and a smile and a stretch, upon a peninsula due-south of the stage. We pitched a tent, and the first day began with a warm sun overhead.

Too many words would empty the experience of its juice so I’ll try to stay short and sweet. There were a lot of friends and a lot of tents to house them. There were a lot of bands and a wooden stage to play them. Each morning we awoke to music and water mumbling over rocks and, for a lucky few of us, coffee sweetened by chicken eggs.

Those same few made a short trek long, but luckily a beach greeted us at the end of it all.  We ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, split by hand. We asked a traveling couple for a ride back to Fernwood, south, and they were more than happy to help. There was music when we returned.

Every band complimented the feel of the forest surrounding us. Many many thank you’s to the musicians I met, in the audience and at the camp, for each and every sound you made this past weekend. Matt Baldwin and Beach House floored me. Two incredible performances.

But I especially want to thank two musicians who played songs that I never expected to hear. I returned to my tent as the sun sank between bands, thirsty and hungry for a seat. A ukulele came from a nearby tent with a hand and a voice to bring it alive. Dina Rae made her small instrument sing and rose a towering voice above it, singing songs that made us all sit still. Thank you.

Sisters also sat by the water, Cass and Karina. Karina fingerpicked a nylon-string guitar; her thumb and fingers sounded circles and layed lace around intuitive melodies played in the shapes of stories.  I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a sound so beautiful in an atmosphere to match.  Thank you.

Throw in some beer and some gummy bears and you have yourself a fairly accurate picture of my time at the Festival in the Forest. I’m looking forward to the next.

Thank You FolkYEAH, Britt, the volunteers, Samuel J. Macon’s beautiful photography, and Big Sur for making it happen. Don’t miss Karina, known as Besos de Tortuga, playing at BrainWash in San Francisco on Saturday, October 18.

Festival in the Forest Spotlight: Beach House

Here’s a lovely new video by Beach House, who are appearing at next months Festival in the Forest (Buy your tickets! Soon to sell out). The faster tempo of the song and different take on the vocals give the song a much happier feeling than the album version. If you haven’t caught them live yet, this gives a good glimpse of what to expect.

NATURALISMO PRESENTS: A FERNWOOD FIRE RELIEF BENEFIT FESTIVAL

It is with great pleasure and ecstaticment that we here at Naturalismo can finally tell you about a benefit concert that we’re helping put on in Big Sur that just so happens to be THE EVENT of the summer. It has only been possible (and a giant thanks to) Folkyeah and Arthur Magazine. It’s been a long time coming and many months-actually now years-to get to this point. A cohesive and wholly compelling musical movement that has made both Tyler and I unable to do anything but feature every aspect of it. The culmination point arrives at allowing us to present live in concert artists such as Devendra Banhart with MEGAPUSS, Guy Blakeslee with The Entrance Band, Silver Jews, Tussle, Beach House and Little Wings among many others in the full lineup below. In what I can only describe as the biggest blow out in summer music festivals, Naturalismo is proud to be a part of making a summer music event so lasting and powerful that it should last you through the next. Tickets go on sale July 23rd (Today!) and I’d buy earlier rather than later because this WILL sell out. Stay tuned to Naturalismo for more updates.
