Donovan Quinn & The 13th Month: Your Wicked Man

Donovan Quinn has a knack for packing remarkable clarity into just a few twisted fragments of verse.

His newest release with The 13th Month, titled Your Wicked Man, is about to see the light of day on both vinyl and CD. I’ve spent a good deal of time with this record, and I’m still not really sure where to begin. Whereas a lot of songs and albums are filled with happy fantasies and “everything’s gonna be alright” type sentiments, Your Wicked Man stands stripped of such predilections and bare.

Seen through people’s rooms, it explores disenchantment, loneliness, beauty, and longing, all with complete and utter honesty. Organs blur by multicolored and thick, choruses wash with heavy cymbals, suns burst, and acoustic guitars deftly navigate the abyss. Jason Quever and Donovan really did a number on the production, and its no wonder that this record will be seeing a vinyl pressing from the good people at Soft Abuse (I wish they would do the same for the first 13th Month record!) and a CD release by the legendary Shrimper Records. So, if you have a mind to, listen to a few tracks and pick up a copy of Your Wicked Man.

The Skygreen Leopards: Gorgeous Johnny

Gorgeous Johnny

The Skygreen Leopards return with Gorgeous Johnny, an album overflowing with ocean-bound storm-washed cars, the buildings of the city, and dimly lit rooms in San Francisco. It’s a sunburnt wasteland, still brimming with the memories of past friendships and old loves.

For Gorgeous Johnny, the Leopards had Jason Quever’s Pan American Studio at their disposal, which has given the production a great degree of clarity, and allowed the boys to augment their acoustic and electric guitars with walls of shimmering organ. This album really is a great place to hang around: more emanates with each listen.

The Skyband are also set for a short tour down the east coast. Dates can be found below.

Artwork for Six Organs / Azul Split LP

The next Six Organs of Admittance album, Luminous Night, is set to be released on Drag City in August.

  1. Actaeon’s Fall (Against The Hounds)
  2. Anesthesia
  3. Bar-Nasha
  4. Cover Your Wounds With The Sky
  5. Ursa Minor
  6. River Of Heaven
  7. The Ballad Of Charley Harper
  8. Enemies Before The Light

Recorded and produced by Randall Dunn at Aleph Studios in Seattle, Washington. A serious crew of musicians on this one, including Eyvind Kang on viola and Hans Teuber on alto flute (think samurai movie jams), among others. More soon. {via Six Organs}

Ben Chasny is also going to appear on a split 12″ with Azul on PSF Records.  The record is going to be released August 5th in an edition of 700.

Empty The Sun, a novel by Joseph Mattson, will be released as a book/CD and as an LP/book around November 4th, with Six Organs providing the soundtrack.

Donovan Quinn and Ben Chasny wrote a record’s worth of music last year “during many late night hangs” while they were next door neighbors in San Francisco. Perhaps these songs will get recorded and released sometime in the future.

The Skygreen Leopards, California's Family Band

The Skygreen Leopards is a collaboration between Donovan Quinn and Glenn Donaldson. They have released six albums and an EP since their formation in 2001, and each successive album has witnessed a transformation of composition.  A river is never the same on two consecutive days, and Disciples Of California, the newest Leopards album, is arguably their “biggest riverboat yet”.

Disciples Of California is the first record to include The Skyband; Wymond Miles on pedal steel, Jasmyn Wong on drums, and Shayde Sartin on bass.  The basic tracks were recorded live in the studio, which gave the rhythm of the songs more space to breathe than on previous recordings.  The result is a jingle-jangling, gentle sway that lies somewhere between pop and folk.  Donovan Quinn and Glenn Donaldon’s highly expressive voices blossom through colored washes of pedal steel as electric twelve-string riffs rotate and slide by overhead. Acoustic strumming, warm and persistent, hold it all together even when the songs threaten to stumble and fade.

Lovers and friends take the listener down the back roads of memory, through the sun-drenched fields and quiet evenings of the past. Like dreams, the songs present scenes that may seem new and strange, and yet somehow entirely primal; derivative of past experiences.  Under closer examination archetypes emerge, which may lead one to ponder the existence of a universal unconscious.  The idea that, at a certain level, we are all manifestations of a deeper archetype, a pattern of being that speaks through all of us.  As Glenn Donaldson said in an interview, ”each song is a remembrance of a song not yet written.”

Donovan Quinn & The 13th Month

Donovan Quinn is a singer/songwriter from San Francisco, California. Since 2001 he’s performed his songs with the Skygreen Leopards (collaborating with Glenn Donaldson) and under the name Verdure. Currently he can be found operating solo, occasionally being joined by various friends and collaborators, under the umbrella of the 13th month.

Donovan’s first full-length solo record, The Rabbit Tracks, was produced in collaboration with Jason Quever (Papercuts) and will be released next month. In the meantime, check out the single for “Sister Alchemy,” also available in 7″ from Soft Abuse.
