Leaves of Life + Bonus Rant

leavesoflifepress

Define ‘folk’ as you will. The term, with its divergent meanings and connotations and applications, has lost its ability to capture a contemporary “genre” in the strictest sense of the word. But as an essence, a philosophy, an outlook, it is still vital. It is still alive when musicians (or anybody, for that matter) share their songs or their stories or themselves with one another. Folk is about sublimating the human condition into art, plain and simple. And though the traveling bards may be working at Guitar Center and the hootenannies relegated to places that serve $6 Pabst, the urge to share, to trade, and to express keeps the folk tradition alive. Compilations are, perhaps, the closest thing the digital realm has to embodying the folk ethos. The artists join hands, so to speak, and share one, maybe two songs apiece. It’s like being around a campfire or in Washington Square Park, minus the whole live human thing. Any reader of this blog knows that compilations have been vital in the transmission of contemporary folk and psych music and, to me, it makes perfect, natural sense. Folk was never about headliners, it was about equal billing.

Curated by Buck Curran of Arborea, Leaves of Life will be released June 23rd on Borne Recordings. All proceeds benefit the UN’s Food Aid Agency, World Food Programme, and human rights advocacy monitors, Not On Our Watch. There will also be a digital version of the album with Bonus Tracks by Jozef Van Wissem, Plains, Denise Dill, and Laurent Brondel, so be sure to pick up a copy and hear some great songs.

February Mixtape from J. Emery Blatchley

04104apreview

Another month, another amazing mixtape from our contributing guitarsmith and all-around good guy J. Emery Blatchley. “Stride” is the second in what should prove to be a long, fruitful lineage of mixes, a bloodline of songs that will extend from J’s ears to yours each month.  This time around, the sonic emphasis is placed on a time in music history when alternating-thumb, fingerpicked polyrhythms weren’t the exception…they were the rule. Kinda. There’s also a hand-picked potpourri of contemporary envelope-pushers to enjoy for those less keen on the Joplin jive.picture-12

Naturalismo Presents: Fern Knight Unplugged

youtube.com/watch?v=mbKfkuJbb74]

I had the amazing pleasure of meeting Fern Knight‘s Margie Wienk and Gillian Chadwick (of Ex Reverie as well) and hearing them play a beautiful, unplugged version of Fern Knight’s “Magpie Suite: Parts II & III.” I shot an interview too, but the dumbass that I am botched the footage. So alas, it is lost, and my forehead is thoroughly bruised from kicking myself on it. But even in darkness there is light, no? We’re left with a rare treat: a haunting, poetic, achingly delicate communion of two voices and one guitar, all captured in the waning twilight of Los Angeles…

Thanks and much love to Margie and Gillian. “Screw Esalen!”

Also, I’ll be posting an exclusive live performance of Ex Reverie in the coming weeks…

First Listen: New Fern Knight LP + West Coast tour with Ex Reverie

With the haunting melodies and traditional instrumentation of traditional British Isles folk (cello, harp, fiddle, acoustic guitar) underpinning Margie Wienk’s delicate vocals, Fern Knight’s new self-titled album evokes themes as disparate as man’s communion with nature to a story of twins who escape from the circus. Carrying the sonic ambition and bucolic palette of early seventies prog while maintaining a decidedly humble and atmospheric demeanor, Fern Knight’s new songs ache with emotions that run the gamut from funereal to whimsical.

I met up with Fern Knight and Ex Reverie at the Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles last night and shot an interview and exclusive unplugged performance of Fern Knight’s new tunes “Magpie Suite, Part II and III”. Stay tuned to naturalismo, as I’ll be posting the beautiful footage soon. The new album is being released this upcoming Tuesday, May 13, so be sure to catch Fern Knight and Ex Reverie as they journey up the West Coast.
