In September of 2008, the San Francisco and Los Angeles scenes converged under the ancient redwoods of Big Sur to make music, make merry, and make love. Performers included local favorites Megapuss, Entrance Band, Fool’s Gold, The Parson Redheads, as well as fantastic sets from Port O’Brien, Beach House, Sleepy Sun, Sam Flax Kenner and more, all capped by a grand send-off from The Silver Jews [the brilliant, brooding presence of David Berman in one of the band's final performances was worth the price of admission alone]. With attendance for this Big Sur Fire Brigade benefit capped at a mere 400(!) campers, the event retained a remarkable purity and intimacy. Festival In The Forest captures this soon-to-be-legendary (((folkYeah!)))-curated show, and the zeitgeist of the California folk/rock scenes, much as Celebration at Big Sur did some 29 years prior. A true gem of a film, Festival in the Forest is not to be missed by music lovers or documentary enthusiasts.

Try as I might, despite the absurdity of the project, I can’t deny the catchiness of Megapusses debut album Surfing. The new video for the single Adam & Steve sees Devendra, Greg Rorgrove and Fabrizio dancing around like crazy people and generally just having fun. You get the feeling that it must be nice to take a break away from the more serious aspects of being an artiste. I’m also always a huge advocate of artists not taking themsleves so goddamn seriously…

Megapuss have announced their first tour dates before the release of their new album Surfing on September 16th. The string of West Coast tour dates takes Devendra Bannhart’s and Gregory Rogrove’s Megapuss alongside The Entrance Band and The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti’s new band Little Joy. Also appearing on Little Joy’s new album and in the band is Rodrigo Amarante (from Brazilian group, Los Hermanos) who appeared on Devendra Banharts Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. “There will be cross-pollination of all sorts on this dynamic triple bill tour, what we know so far is that Fab Moretti will play drums for Megapuss and Greg Rogove will play drums for Little Joy. Producer and guitarist Noah Georgeson will play guitar for both Little Joy & Megapuss (as he also did on both of their albums). Expect the unexpected.”
Stay tuned for photos and updates along the way.

It is with great pleasure and ecstaticment that we here at Naturalismo can finally tell you about a benefit concert that we’re helping put on in Big Sur that just so happens to be THE EVENT of the summer. It has only been possible (and a giant thanks to) Folkyeah and Arthur Magazine. It’s been a long time coming and many months-actually now years-to get to this point. A cohesive and wholly compelling musical movement that has made both Tyler and I unable to do anything but feature every aspect of it. The culmination point arrives at allowing us to present live in concert artists such as Devendra Banhart with MEGAPUSS, Guy Blakeslee with The Entrance Band, Silver Jews, Tussle, Beach House and Little Wings among many others in the full lineup below. In what I can only describe as the biggest blow out in summer music festivals, Naturalismo is proud to be a part of making a summer music event so lasting and powerful that it should last you through the next. Tickets go on sale July 23rd (Today!) and I’d buy earlier rather than later because this WILL sell out. Stay tuned to Naturalismo for more updates.

As the somnolent sun took to its slumber, the young and perpetually fashionable Los Angeles crowd was alight with anticipatory chatter. Mystery, it seemed, was half the fun. With beers in hand and smoke (of all kinds) in lungs, we waited for Megapuss to make their debut. The crowd was restless, curious and uncertain. The prevailing thought: “What the hell am I about to see?”
As the stars began to emerge I sat staring at the empty stage, thinking that mystique is an unfortunate concept. For an artist like Devendra Banhart whose own flesh is sometimes dwarfed by the size of his shadow, mystique is a burden and blessing. On the one hand, it’s what drew such thick crowds to the courtyard of the Hammer Museum in the first place; but, on the other, it forces the performer to reaffirm his own humanity beyond the gossamer cloth of expectation and illusion. Mystique is static, life is not.

While many Devendra fans may be eagerly awaiting another solo release, Megapuss will have to quench that desire for now. It’s easy to forget that his last album came out under a year ago. During the show I found myself at times somewhat yearning for the music that existed nearly a decade ago, but Devendra has grown and learned and changed into a wholly new person. It’s also easy to forget that this is MEGAPUSS and not an outlet for his solo work. If Devendra were reactionary, he wouldn’t be Devendra. Just as each passing moment is a new reality, we also become new. Devendra stepped onto the stage at 9pm wearing black spandex leggings, a droopy t-shirt, and a loincloth made of jiggling dildos. When one of Lauren Dukoff’s photographs of Devendra appeared on the screen behind the stage, Devendra aptly stated: “That’s not even me.” He was right. On that stage, in that moment, Devendra may have looked silly, but the honesty of his expression has always been his greatest charm.
For the next 45 minutes, the band performed their set with a joyous insouciance rare in a modern “indie rock” concert. The drummer wore a vibrant kimono. Noah Georgeson plucked bass and guitar wearing a Panama Jack safari getup. Greg Rogove, Devendra’s main partner in crime, complimented Devendra’s black leggings and t-shirt with a a white version. Neon sunglasses found their way onto everyone’s face at some point. The songs, as the Museum’s curator pointed out, “Were all written in ten minutes or less.” He continued to say, “I don’t know if that makes them geniuses, or idiots, or both.” The fact is, as I sat there smiling and laughing, they were both – and neither – at the same time. They were just having fun, and so was I.
More pics to come later!!

June 16th, 2008

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been spending the past two and a half days listening to Devendra Banhart and Greg Rogove’s new Megapuss material. Our sides have been thoroughly split whilst pondering the hilarity of Trader Joe’s hummus references in song (a first?). Pitchfork, our sardonic Chi-Town comrades, even had the gaul to question the validity of the recordings themselves! They asked: although Devendra’s voice was of course prominent and distinctive, was it true that Megapuss was a real band and not a hoax from a skilled Pro-Tooler?
Here at naturalismo we always knew that Megapuss was salt of the earth. But, for those naysayers who need more confirmation, let’s turn to our friend Aziz Ansari from Human Giant, shall we?
Aziz: “Devendra called me a few weeks ago and asked me to sing vocals to a song about “Duck People.” I told him I had no clue who the duck people were, but he kindly told me they wore hoods, crossed bridges, and were really into magazines and Trader Joe’s. I hope you like it.”
Aziz can be heard on the spoken word portions of “Duck People Duck Man.” It all makes sense now! Aziz will also be performing with Devendra and Greg at this Wednesday’s Megapuss show at the Hammer Gallery in Los Angeles.

Devendra Banhart is back in action, back on the scene, and — like Zakk Wylde before him – ready to melt some faces with some insane riffs, killer shredding, and delicately plucked classical guitar. Aside from many offensively intrusive paparazzi photos, we haven’t seen or heard much from Devendra since the conclusion of his Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon tour. Until now.
Devendra Banhart: “Well, I have a band — it’s me and the drummer from Priestbird, Greg Rogove. What started off as a joke — “Let’s start a band and let’s make up song titles” — to our surprise and shock, we started writing songs, and we’ve written eight songs that I’m really really proud of and excited about. We’re gonna record a real record, and we’re called MEGAPUSS.”

You heard it right, folks. Megapuss. I’m happy to say that I have two NEW Megapuss tracks for you to enjoy today. AND, if you live in the Los Angeles area, you can catch a free Megapuss show at UCLA’s Hammer Gallery on Wednesday, June 18. From the Hammer:
Megapuss make their auspicious debut with an evening of live music and visuals under the stars. Bring cushions and blankets, sip a cocktail amid the bamboo in the Hammer Courtyard and feel the positive summer vibe. This talented duo plays a unique style of pop music tempered with a healthy dose of humor. The performance is complemented by projections from photographer Lauren Dukoff whose honest and authentic portraiture is the subject of a book to be released in spring 2009. The collaborative team of Jon Beasley and Chandler McWilliams add kinetic layers to the photos by digitally manipulating and animating them.
