☳ GRIMES ☳ Know Phase Mixtape

Download: ☳ GRIMES ☳ Know Phase Mixtape

While Grimes spent the better part of this past Tuesday sharing upcoming artists she likes, this mix reaches back in time a bit further to bring to light where she has drawn influence and inspiration from for her own songwriting. Allow the sonorously enigmatic Claire Hamill to start it off:

HOLY SHIT NEW HOLY SHIT! / BAD HABITAT / OMEN GAMES

Holy Shit just announced three very exciting new releases. About time! First up is the new full-length Omen Games that is nearing completion. Next up is a new collection of demos and outtakes spanning the last 5 years mostly made with Ariel Pink called Bad Habitat. Finally, if you haven’t had a chance to get  familiar with Matt Fishbeck’s old (genius) material Stranded at Two Harbors will be re-released on vinyl in February. It’s never too late to get acquainted with our generations Ziggy Stardust. Between this and John Maus new album announcement it’s an exciting year for these formerly Lost Angeles artists. For now you can check out the new website that has links to new songs, demos and videos. Finally, check below for a new forward written by Matt Fishbeck for the SPF Noir Mix that Vice tossed aside and listen to a new track.

SPF NOIR FORWARD:

WHO WAS IT, THE GERMS? WHO SAID “WHAT WE DO IS SECRET.” WELL I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. IT’S LIKE HEARING AN EMITT RHODES SONG IN A WES ANDERSON MOVIE, AND THINKING, HEY, THAT’S OURS. AND GETTING STIFF ABOUT IT (AND NOT THE GOOD STIFF). BUT THE FACT IS, THAT ATTITUDE, THAT SAME LINE OF THOUGHT, IS PROFFERED BY THOSE — WE — WHO ALSO GO ‘ROUND SAYING “IN A PERFECT WORLD THIS WOULD BE A HIT, EVERYONE SHOULD BE SINGING THIS” ABOUT SOME ‘HOPE’LESS BEDSIT FAVORITE.

WELL HERE’S WHAT I LISTEN TO. I’M SHARING SOME SECRETS, SURE, BUT IF YOU CARE THEN I CARE. SOME ARE STAPLES IN THE HOLY SHIT CAMP (ELECTRONIC, McCARTHY, THE PINK DOTS), AND SOME ARE TRACKS THAT I JUST CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO THESE DAYS. BASICALLY, IF YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT THE INSIDE OF MY BRAIN SOUNDS LIKE, HERE’S ME FLASHING. AND YEAH, IT’S ALL VERY PASTY, AND WHITE, AND ENGLISH, BUT FETISHES ARE FETISHES AND DON’T NEED EXPLAINING COS THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE. IT’S LIKE TRYING TO TAKE THE TEMPERATURE OF A PAINTING.

IT OCCURS TO ME THAT MOST OF THIS STUFF ISN’T NEW. THERE IS ONE SONG THAT CAME OUT, IF YOU CAN CALL IT THAT, IN THE LAST YEAR (NUNZIO FATTINI; GO TO HIS WEBSITE! NUNZIOFATTINI.COM! YOU’RE WELCOME!). ANOTHER’S ONLY BEEN ON MYSPACE SO FAR (THE JOE WAINE TRACK), BUT WILL BE A 7″ ON POROUS RECORDS QUITE SOON. AND THERE’S A HOLY SHIT NUMBER I COULDN’T RESIST SHARING, MAINLY COS I JUST FINISHED IT LAST WEEK. IT’S CALLED “A PLACE IN THE SUN,” AND IT’S A MARINE GIRLS COVER, AND THIS IS THE FIRST “LIGHT OF DAY” IT HAS SEEN.

AS FOR THE REST, CHANCES ARE THE BULK OF IT IS NEW TO MOST READERS & DOWNLOADERS. I COULD BE WRONG, AND COME TO THINK OF IT, I WOULD LOVE TO MEET ANY OF YOU WHO ARE INTO THEY GO BOOM!! OR ALWAYS, OR IN EMBRACE. I DON’T KNOW, DO POP FREAKS READ VICE? I KNOW MOMUS CONTRIBUTES, OR HAS, SOMETIMES. AND GOD, I’D LOVE NEIL TENNANT OR CATH CARROLL TO GET IN TOUCH. mattfishbeck@gmail.com

I PUT THIS TOGETHER IN THE SPIRIT AND THE MANNER IN WHICH I USED TO MAKE TAPES AT MY FRIEND BRANDT LARSON’S HOUSE. THERE’S AN OLD FURTHER SONG CALLED “GOING TO GLENDORA,” AND THAT’S WHAT THAT’S ABOUT. HOLING UP IN A BIG HOUSE FULL OF RECORDS, LOSING YOURSELF IN A VIBE, AND MAKING YOURSELF A SOUVENIR. BRANDT (AND REX) ALWAYS MADE THE BEST TAPES, BUT I MADE A FEW SEMI-GEMS. GEEZ I MET ARIEL WHILE I WAS MAKING A TAPE AT BRANDT’S.

Here’s every take Felt ever did of Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow (10 in total). I could listen to this song indefinitely and never tire of it. Each version really has its own charm, here are my two favorites:

Molly Nilsson

Swedish born, absurdly talented and most likely not well known only due to her sonic wanderlust rarely leaving Berlin. Think of her as John Maus’ seductress. Just about anything she seems to set her drum machine to is infectiously catchy. Check these videos out:

Her early demos remind me of Mo Tucker’s charming tracks for the Velvets:

Pure Ecstasy: 7 Songs for Naturalismo Mixtape

Nate Grace of Pure Ecstasy has generously put together an awesome 7 song mix today for us here at Naturalismo. Pure Ecstasy’s most recent release, ‘Easy’  hasn’t really left my record player since I picked it up two weeks ago at his show here in Aquarius records and that’s saying a lot since it’s only a 45! It was actually during the performance of his last song Easy that I caught myself dying to know what music had caught his own ear recently. The result: a rad mixtape that should take over your playlist for the afternoon. So without further ado, here’s Pure Ecstasy’s Mixtape for Naturalismo.  Thanks again to Nate for putting this together, while you’re listening go grab his new 45 here.

Download: Pure Ecstasy’s Mixtape for Naturalismo

Update: Nearly forgot that Nate had sent over a 7th song for it that I think is my favorite track on the mix. You can grab the full mix above or download any of the individual songs on the mix below.

Painted Ship

I stumbled onto these guys a bit back while trying to track down a song sung by Peter Fonda (I’ll leave my 60’s actors turned Byrdsian musicians to the musical meandering of David Hemmings, thank you very much).  Anyways, I uncovered this Painted Ship song Frustration on some random 60’s Garage comp and what a killer track it is, definitely has a similar vibe to what bands such as the Ganglians and the Mantles mastered this year. Come to think of it, it may have appeared on a mid release Pebbles comp as well but as good as those are they can become a bit trying at times scouring for their best moments. Not to mention that I’m increasingly realizing that many songs can make more sense through the lens of influence upon current artists.

Check it out:

and the Hemmings and Fonda songs for good measure:

David Hemmings – Back Street Mirror LOVE this track, seems downright seasonal at the moment too. Also interesting to note is that the Byrds are actually his backing band on this track (and the rest of the album).

Lucky Dragons

LuckyDragonsluckyDragonsLucky. There honestly should be a section here devoted entirely to the going ons of all things Lucky Dragons, because in all sincerity the places he’s gone and ventured into over the past few years musically are some of the most refreshingly inspiring and original that I’ve ever witnessed or heard. After finally catching a show of his a few weeks ago in San Francisco, I realized that he’s something of a contemperarity in my eyes because the nature of his music is entirely welcoming and comforting, despite using technological elements that one might normally  associate with feelings of alienation in this increasingly lost world of technological intangibility. One element of the show that I was particularly entranced by was how through employing the use of instruments fed through effects boards handed to audience members in order to encourage audience participation, Luke Fishbeck of Lucky Dragons was able to craft an evolving environment that wasn’t so much forced onto the audience but let loose as an energy that swept over all in attendance. It was only after the concert that I was able to  gradually begin to process the sheer blissful nature of universally experiencing and spontaneously helping create a sound with others through the use of technology. To have all of those digital elements abstractly come together as an organic sound and entirely coalesce as a nurturing force is really something everyone should experience.  I don’t know what else to say that wouldn’t cheapen the experience for those thinking they might be interested in going out to a show of his, all I will say is that it’s a life experience.

Go purchase Dream Island Laughing Language, promise you won’t be disappointed.

and check out a few songs/videos from his current and previous albums:

Davy Graham

Allow me to alienate myself for a moment here and say that while I love Davy Graham’s first album, The Guitar Player, I always thought that the sound was slightly overproduced in comparison to his first three cuts on his first EP 3/4 AD and a rare BBC outtake where you get to see him in his more raw and natural element.  Sometimes I think the only proper way to hear him in album form is on “After Hours,” a performance recorded after a gig at the University of Hull in 1967, with a hand-held mic in a student bedroom at 1am with a bunch of drunk students in the background. If this is your first experience with Graham’s music I think this is the perfect place to start. I’ll try and get some of the After Hours songs up soon but for now you can hear the newly remastered version streaming for free on his website.

I think the difference between the E.P.’s earlier sound and his first album is well evidenced by his two versions of Anji-his most famous song- that was somewhat popularized by Bert Jansch and more so by Jimmy Page obsessing over it. Regardless the first take of it to me sounds more full and the 2nd sounds a bit hollow to my ears. Both are fantastic though…

New Beck: "Chemtrails"

People have been crawling all over themselves to attempt to describe the new sound Beck has ventured into on his new song “Chemtrails,” descriptors ranging from Barrett era Floyd to the gossamer pop of the Beach Boys, unfortunately to my ears it sounds more like straight Caribou. It’s not the end of the world, Caribou is one of my favorite contemporary musicians, so to hear his influence on another one is welcome if anything. It’s just that I can’t help but recall back to a moment at a Coachella a few years back where an unannounced Beck show was underway in one of the small tents. I’d been warned before hand of it, so I was front and center for the show. As Beck segued into another song from Sea Change he caught wind of the next stage over insanity of a Jr Senior show-stopping mid song he announced that he wanted to rock out, it was easy to forget the upbeat sample heavy sound of his heydays. It wasn’t long after that that I read a quote about Guero’s progress stemming partially from a fan walking up to Beck and yelling, “Man, Why don’t you ROCK any more?” I think that Becks been doing some sound searching after Sea Change. It was a landmark achievement in his career, which I think shortly after sparked his point as an artist coping with evolution and maturation of his sound and then artificially attempting to go back and relive his previous sound starting with the album Guero. I’m still highly anticipating his new release and think this new song sounds great, but I am still curious of how direct of an influence I think Caribou sounds to be. Of course I’ll leave my full decision off until I can hear the entire album.

Note by Edvard: I think they both both owe some credit to Child, Skip and especially Lothar and the Hand People.

3 New Circulatory System songs

Praise the psychedelic lord- the Circulatory System have finally arrived with 3 new songs after a 7 year recording sabbatical. It was way back in Naturalismo’s younger days (read: one year ago) that we first got a taste of their early new material on a rough bootleg. After what has had to be several entire album re-writes and hundreds of tracks, it looks like we’re getting closer to an actual release date of the final album. The albums progress was last mentioned a few months ago by John Fernandes (bassist) when he said they were near finished but knowing Will Cullen Hart “a car could drive by and he’d decide to start over or take the entire album in a new direction.” Regardless, it looks like there’s been less traffic around the studio and they’ve finalized the recording. What’s interesting to note is that the new album sees the entire reuniting of all the members of The Olivia Tremor Control. I’m sure Jeff Mangum will have a few fingerprints on the album as well. I’ve yet to tire of the foggy psych pop of their first album over the years. Despite having all of the members of Olivia back together, it’s clear that this is very much still Will Cullen Hart’s project… have a listen to 3 of the new album tracks below, details to follow:

Circulatory System – Same Place [mp3]

Circulatory System – Tiny Concerts [mp3]

Circulatory System – Path of the Parallels [mp3]
