The Report

Glad that I finally get to mention this amazing undertaking McGregor over at Chocolate Bobka has taken over the past year. Collecting articles, music, video, art and more from a vast array of some of the most interesting figures in contemporary art. McGregor has assembled what is likely to become one of the most interesting publications this year and will only be made available for a short period of time, each copy being handmade to order. The Report is a cultural breath of fresh air with its focus on slowing down a bit from the rapid and brief fragments comprising much of online music/arts documentation and delving deeper into what is happening at the moment. It also has a focus on bringing you content that doesn’t translate as well online as it does in print and physical media, in McGregor’s own words:

The Report, if you don’t already know, is a 100+ page bi-annual journal, compilation and DVD package, containing the weirdest, wisest musings on culture, art and music. Contributors include Dent May, Ben Chasny, Rob Mitchum (Pitchfork), Devin Woolf (Naturalismo), Justin Gage (Aquarium Drunkar), Molly Sarle (Mountain Man), Matt Mondanile (Ducktails, Real Estate), Sawyer Carter Jacobs (Underwater Peoples, Family Portrait), Emilie Friedlander (Visitation Rites, Arthur Mag, Tiny Mix Tapes) and Cian Traynor (Guardian, SeeWhatYouHear.com), and Douglas Gibson (Mountain Fold Music), amongst many, many others.

View the trailer:

The Report also comes with a cassette mix tape and digital download (tracklist is below), as well as an exclusive DVD of never-before-seen footage of Justin Townes Earle, Pure Ecstasy, Twin Sister, the Alex Bleeker and the Freaks supergroup (featuring 2 drummers and Julian Lynch on keys), as well as selections from the Chocolate Bobka Church show featuring Mountain Man, Liam the Younger, Lux Perpetua, and No Demons here.
Get a taste of the video here, with an exclusive preview of Alex Bleeker and Mountain Man covering Girls “Oh Boy” at the Chocolate Bobka church show last December.

The Report is made to order, and pre-order will only be available for 2 weeks, so go to Chocolate Bobka (http://chocolatebobka.blogspot.com/2010/02/video-report-bleekermtn-man-oh-boy.html) asap to order a copy. Editions will be limited.

Real Estate set to release full length LP on Nov. 17th

First off, what an amazing album cover for what has become one of my most anticipated releases this year. Second, can I acknowledge for a second how frustrating it is searching for information on the bands name between Sunny Day Real Estate getting back together and the general other use of the words Real Estate? Anyways, it’s worth the trouble because these dudes have consistently been crafting some of the best music all year through a series of singles, 7″‘s and a great EP. It’s about time that a full length LP came from them and I really think that it will be a great listen. They’re gearing up for tour in preparation for the Real Estate S/T full length release and will share about half their shows with the other deservedly hyped Girls. Just wish that Real Estate would make it out to California already!

Copper Tones: Naturalismo Summer Mixtape

coppertones

I’ve been working on this mix for the past few weeks and I think it’s finally at the point where I’m content with where it has ended up. It was actually resolved from two separate mixes I had planned to put out on Naturalismo. The first was an early seventies mix highlighted with a heavy dose of some songs that I felt were especially influential right now in what is going on in newer tunes being made. I’ll spare you the tangent, but it seems pretty apparent to me that a lot of music right now has some of that early 70′s warm tonal vibe going on. The second, a summer mix, was focusing on artists that I feel are crafting some of the more interesting and innovative soundscapes around right now. Well, that and a few balmy summer songs that would just be nice to let resonate and air out in the breeze of some sunny backyard BBQ.  Anyways, it became pretty apparent to me that the two mixes meshed perfectly together and well… hope you enjoy. I think this is probably my favorite mix I’ve cultivated in awhile.

Some highlights on Copper Tones that you may or may not have heard before:

We All Together – Tomorrow

Peruvian band from 1973 that were obsessed with solo era McCartney/Lennon… unbelievably catchy and dare I say out McCartney’s McCartney at times.

Paul McCartney – Ram On

Giant influence on We All Together, off his 2nd solo album Ram which is probably one of the most underrated albums ever.

Real Estate – Snow (instrumental)

To my ears thus far, these dudes can really do no wrong. Really, really talented musicians.

The Beach Boys – All I Wanna Do

Hey it’s Ariel Pink-40 years prior. Hard to believe what Brian Wilson was tapping into at this point.

Alright now download the full mix..
